AMENDMENT NO. 9 TO RESOLUTION NO. 12-96
APPROVING MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE BLUE AND WHITE
COLLAR UNITS AND ADOPTING SALARY SCHEDULE
AND RELATED BENEFITS.
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 12-96 sets salaries and related benefits for
employees of the Blue Collar Unit.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield
that effective the beginning of the first full pay period following Council action, the Salary
Schedule, a part of Resolution No. 12-96, is hereby amended as follows:
1. Resolution No. 12-96 is hereby amended by deleting the following
class titles from the Blue Collar Unit:

CLASS CHARACTEllISTICS:
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing semiskilled
work in servicing and maintaining automotive equipment; and performs
other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Carries out periodic routine maintenance on public works equipment
in accordance with prescribed schedules; refuels, checks, greases,
and lubricates a variety of light and heavy equipment; checks and
services batteries, and checks and repairs tires; inspects equip-
ment for external damage and for mechanical defects; performs
maintenance work on specialized equipment; makes and fits brooms
for road sweepers; makes routine inspections of specialized equip-
ment; keeps maintenance records; carries out minor repairs and
replaces components as necessary; drives vehicles as required; deals
with inquiries from the public and emergencies arising when on late
duty; washes and cleans equipment and workshops; maintains servicing
equipment in good order; keeps records and quantities used and main-
tains stocks of a variety of fuels and oils.
DESIRABLE MINIML~t QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience: One year experience in the servicing of
automotive equipment.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Good knowledge in the mechanical
parts of a variety of automotive equipment; good knowledge of the
servicing, greasing and lubrication requirements of a variety of
11ght and heavy public works and utility equipment.
Ability to read and write at a level for successful job performance:
ability to inspect a variety of equipment, make minor repairs, and
report defects, ability to drive vehicles of the type serviced;
ability to work with a minimum of supervision; ability to keep
maintenance records. Skill in the lubricating and greasing of
automotive equipment, tire repairs, and equipment washing.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class 3 California
driver's license with a Class I license required upon renewal.

CLASS TITLE:
FLEET SERVICE WORKER I
CLASS SUMMARY:
This is an entry level classification. Under direct supervision, performs semiskilled work in
servicing and maintaining fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment; and
performs other work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of those positions in this class.
They are descriptive, not limiting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Carries out periodic routine maintenance in accordance with prescribed schedules.
Refuels, checks, greases and lubricates a variety of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service
equipment.
Checks and services batteries, and checks and repairs tires; inspects fleet vehicles, construction and
municipal service equipment for external damage and for mechanical defects.
Performs maintenance work on fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
Fits brooms for road sweepers.
Makes routine inspections of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
Carries out minor repairs and replaces components as necessary.
Drives fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment as required.
Deals with inquiries from the public and City Departments/divisions regarding emergencies and
other issues.
Washes and cleans fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment and work areas.
Maintains servicing equipment in good order.
Keeps records of quantities used and maintains stocks of a variety of fuels and oils.
CLASS TITLE: FLEET SERVICE WORKER I 14040
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Fleet Service Worker I is the entry level class in the Fleet Service Worker series. Under direct
supervision incumbents learn and perform a variety o£ semiskilled duties in the servicing and
maintenance of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: One year experience in the servicing of fleet vehicles, construction
and municipal service equipment or related experience.
Knowledge of: mechanical parts of a variety of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal
service equipment; servicing, greasing and lubrication requirements o£a variety of fleet vehicles and
construction and municipal service equipment.
Ability_ to: read and write at a level For successful job performance; inspect a variety of fleet
vehicles and construction and municipal service equipment; make minor repairs and report defects;
drive vehicles of the type serviced; work with a minimum of supervision; keep maintenance records.
Skill in: lubricating and greasing of fleet vehicles and construction and municipal service
equipment; tire repairs and equipment washing.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license is required.
A Class "A" California driver's license must be obtained prior to the expiration of the six month
probationary period.
Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions: Must possess sufficient strength and stamina
to lift and remove or install parts weighing up to 80 pounds. Must be willing to work outdoors in
all weather conditions and to work in confined areas and from heights and with exposure to
unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions.

CLASS TITLE: TRADES ASSISTANT (EQUIPMENT)
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Under general supervision, performs work of less than journeyman
level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel
automotive and related equipment; makes routine inspection,
testing and maintenance on automobiles, motorcycles, heavy-duty
tr~cks, bulldozers, road sweepers, and other city automotive
equipment; assists journeyman mechanics in overhaul and repair of
equipment and performing some general repair work as well as
changing worn parts on vehicles of all types and performing
lubrication on heavy equipment; maintains stock of equipment or
material; assists skilled workers as required; and performs other
work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

automotive equipment, including motorcycles, automobiles, trucks
and heavy equipment; installs lights; adjusts brakes; makes minor
electrical repairs; reports major defects; assists mechanics in

starters, upholstery, and suspension systems; changes wheel
bearings; installs starters and lights; paints equipment; cleans
and maintains shop, tools, and shop equipment.
DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: One year experience as a helper or
apprentice in one of the trades.
KnowledGe, abilities and Skills: Some knowledge of the methods,
materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light- and
heavy-duty automotive equipment; some knowledge of the operating
principles of gasoline and diesel engines; knowledge of the
greasing and lubrications requirements of light and heavy public
works equipment.
Ability to carry out routine and minor repairs; ability to work
effectively with minimum supervision. Skill in the use of
standard tools and equipment of the trade.
License or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class 3 California
Driver's license.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Fleet Service Worker II is distinguished fi'om a Fleet Service Worker I in that this class may assist
journey mechanics in the more complete overhaul and general repair work, as well as changing worn
parts of fleet vehicles, construction and municipal service equipment of all types. In addition, the
Fleet Service Worker II may be required to independently handle more complex assignments than
the Fleet Service Worker I, requiring greater knowledge and abilities.
