HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/28/2007 B A K E R S F I E L D City Manager's Office Memorandum December 28, 2007 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager A`rla( SUBJECT: General Information 1 . The Fairfax / Highway 178 Interchange project is on track. Approximately 175,000 cubic meters, which is 39%, of the earthwork south of SR-178 has been excavated and hauled to the City's landfill. Attached are some photos provided by the Public Works Department that give a good view, both eastbound and westbound, of the massive amount of work involved. Additionally, retaining wall #3, which runs along the golf course, is 27% complete, and work has begun on several of the drainage systems throughout the project limits. 2. Final work on the weir in Central Park is being done and decorative rocks are being placed in the new pond area for the Mill Creek demonstration project. Both the weir and the ponds will be complete and ready for canal water on January 1st. Kudos to Public Works and Water Resources staff for all of their hard work and long hours. Contractors Gilliam & Sons and Jim Alfter Concrete have also put in a valiant effort, according to Jack LaRochelle, Project Manager. If you get a chance, I encourage you all to drive by and have a look. Photos are attached showing how well the project is progressing and to give you a preview of what an attractive amenity it will be when completed! 3. Work on the Saunders Park Recreation Facility is continuing on schedule. The frame of the metal building has been erected and the roof is in progress. The contractor has also started installing the electrical system for the building. As you can see from the photographs that are attached, it is coming along nicely. We are very excited about the versatile uses for this facility; it will be a really positive addition to the area. 4. Fire Station 5 is on schedule and is nearing completion. Barring any unexpected delays, the facility should be complete and ready for occupancy in late January. The Police Department will also be utilizing the facility as a satellite location. Photos are attached. Stay tuned for information regarding a grand unveiling! Honorable Mayor and City Council December 28, 2007 Page 2 5. Staff took a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant #3 Expansion yesterday, and what we saw was impressive. As of the end of the month, the project will be 14.53% cost-wise, and 11 .52% time-wise, completed. Attached are some recent photographs of the work in progress. 6. Good news! Louis Sun, engineer at Wastewater Division, has passed the Grade V exam as a certified wastewater treatment plant operator. This is not an easy task, so we commend him for his efforts. Congratulations, Louis! 7. Recreation and Parks will be holding the annual Polar Bear Dip at McMurtrey on January 1 st at 11 :00 a.m. We will be using the activity pool - which is not heated - and add blocks of ice to chill it down even more. Participants choose which slide they want to use to "take the plunge". Once they slide into the cold water, they make their way to the other end of the pool, take a hot shower and have hot chocolate. Per the attached brochure, the price is only $5.00; it is $25.00 if they want to remember the occasion with a warm sweatshirt. Spectators are welcome! 8. 1 am out of the office on January 2nd and 3rd. John Stinson will be in charge, should you need assistance. 9.
