CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE
MEMORANDUM
September 11 , 2009
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager
SUBJECT: General Information
MISCELLANEOUS CITY NEWS
Great News! Yesterday we were notified by the U.S. Department of Energy that we have
successfully completed the application process and have been awarded $3,040,700 in
Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Funds. These funds will be used to
construct a 1-megawatt solar power facility at Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 3. The
realization of this renewable power supply will significantly offset the power needed to run
the recently upgraded treatment plant. I would like to thank our Wastewater Manager Art
Chianello and everyone that assisted him in securing these funds.
The City received an Honorable mention in the San Joaquin Valley Blueprint 2009 awards
under the Sustainable Development Policies category for the Mill Creek project. The
awards will be presented at a luncheon in Fresno on October 2nd. The San Joaquin Valley
Blueprint consists of eight counties working together to form a preferred vision for the
Central Valley for future development.
The Gospel Festival will be held this Saturday from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Bright House
Networks Amphitheater. There will be several local bands performing, along with Mathew
West, performing all day and the best part is the entertainment is free.
Next Friday, September 18'h, is Park(ing) Day in the parking spaces in front of City Hall
North. Come enjoy a park setting in downtown Bakersfield and learn about park projects,
programs and have some popcorn.
