HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009_09_11_09_DUI Checkpoint results BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE William Rector, Chief of Police ________________________________________________________________________ Contact: Detective Mary DeGeare Public Information Officer 661-326-3803 mdegeare@Bakersfieldpd.us For Immediate Release September 11, 2009 The Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Thursday, 9/10/09, between the hours of 6:00-10:00 p.m., in the 1000 block. of Calloway Drive. As a result of this enforcement event, 2695 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 1857 vehicles were screened by officers, 19 vehicles were impounded, 9 drivers received citations for being unlicensed, 10 drivers were cited for driving on a suspended or revoked license, 11 motorists were issued citations for miscellaneous vehicle code violations and one adult female was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia when she was found to be in possession of a glass methamphetamine smoking pipe. One driver was asked to perform field sobriety tests after officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from his vehicle; the driver was not found to be under the influence and was released. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in DUI related collisions, as well as insuring motorists on city streets are in possession of a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober, designated drivers. Funding for this program was provided by a grant for the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
