responded to the 300 block of Monterey Street for a report of subjects fighting. Officers responded but were unable to locate an altercation, however, heard several gunshots in the area.
Officers continued patrolling and at approximately 12:20 a.m., Officer Daniel McAfee was traveling west on Niles Place from Union Avenue when he observed a subject later identified as
Darrin Hogg 22, walking west on the north side of the road. Officer McAfee called to Hogg requesting to speak with him to determine his involvement, if any, in the disturbance. Hogg
declined and continued walking. As Officer McAfee started to exit his patrol car to continue to investigate, Hogg turned on Officer McAfee and began shooting at him with a 45 caliber
handgun, then started running east bound on Niles Place towards Union Avenue. Officer McAfee returned fire. Simultaneously, partnered Officers Robert Pair and Michael Johns arrived and
observed the gunfire exchange between Hogg and Officer McAfee. As Officer Pair and Johns exited their patrol car, Hogg began shooting at them as well. Both Officer Pair and Johns returned
fire striking Hogg multiple times and Hogg fell and was taken into custody. Hogg was transported to Kern Medical Center where he died. His weapon was recovered; it was a 45 caliber handgun
which Hogg had shot empty. 45 caliber casings were also located in the 200 block of Monterey near Hogg’s residence and may be related to the gunfire officers heard prior to contacting
Hogg. Hogg’s gunfire struck both patrol cars multiple times, including the head rest of the driver seat and the right rear quarter panel of the car Officer McAfee was exiting when Hogg
began began to fire at him; and the passenger side spotlight, right front bumper, passenger door, and right quarter panel on the vehicle Officer Johns and Pair were exiting when Hogg
fired on them. Hogg has an existing felony warrant for cocaine sales out of Sacramento, CA. None of the three officers involved were injured. They will be placed on routine administrative
leave until the conclusion of the investigation and subsequent review process. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Bakersfield Police at 661-327-7111.
