RESOLUTION NO. 136-09
A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING AMRITSAR, INDIA,
A SISTER CITY OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
WHEREAS, in 2001, representatives from the Bakersfield Punjabi community
suggested the possibility of establishing an Sister City relationship between an Indian
city and the City of Bakersfield, and two years later recommended to the members of
the Bakersfield Sister City Project Corporation, the City of Amritsar, India be considered
for such a relationship; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program is recognized worldwide and is designed to
promote mutual understanding and good will by an exchange of ideas, materials and
visits; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program has as its aim the bridging of cultural
differences that divide people, the removal of misunderstandings that hinder the
peaceful exchange of ideas and customs, and the building of a lasting peace that
strengthens individual freedom and cooperation in a wide variety of social, economic
and political relationships; and
WHEREAS, a number of visits by official delegations have taken place between the
cities of Amritsar, India, and Bakersfield, California, United States of America, between
the years 2006 and 2009, resulting in the mutual conclusion that a Sister City
relationship would be of benefit to the citizens of both cities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Bakersfield does hereby
resolve that Amritsar, India, be designated as a Sister City to the City of Bakersfield,
authorizes the Mayor of Bakersfield to sign all documents to implement the Sister City
relationship, and that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Mayor of Amritsar,
India.
