HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/08/2010 B A K E R S F I E L D CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE MEMORANDUM January 8, 2010 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Cou cil FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information MISCELLANEOUS CITY NEWS In order to save fuel and improve efficiency, the Solid Waste Division is planning to reroute some residential refuse and greenwaste routes in those areas where City crews do the collection. This rerouting project will save about 1,000 gallons of LNG fuel per month, and about 20 hours of driving per week. We plan to hold a workshop for you at the regular Council meeting of January 27th Residents will be notified of their new pickup days through several means: • Postcards mailed a few days beforehand; • The City's "Rapid Notify" phone system will call affected households; and, • Flyers will be attached to refuse carts or placed on doorsteps. Staff plans to make the transition during February since it is the best time of year to reroute. Refuse and greenwaste are less bulky in the winter after the holiday peak which makes it easier to accommodate extra pickups for those residents who may forget their new pickup day. During the transition, residents won't have to wait more than one extra day between pickups. This will be similar to the normal one day delay for holidays. There are three tree planting events planned for this month at the following locations, dates and times: • Jastro Park on January 16th at 2:00 p.m. • Aera Park on January 23rd at 9:00 a.m. • Hart Park on January 30th at 9:00 a.m. The locations were selected with the help of the Tree Foundation, County of Kern, and City of Bakersfield. Trans-West is donating the trees and supplying volunteers to assist with the plantings. The enclosed flyer contains more information. The Fire Department's year-end status report of contaminated sites being addressed in the City is enclosed. - In an earlier "General Information" memo, we indicated that the Police towing list issue would be on the agenda for January 13th. Due to timing and workload related problems it has been delayed until January 27tH Honorable Mayor and City Council January 8, 2010 Page 2 — The following reports are enclosed: • Streets Division's weekly work schedule. • Construction Division's weekly roadway paving projects update.
