City of Bakersfield fell when compared to the previous year. The overall crime rate in 2009 was 530 reported crimes per 10,000 citizens. The overall crime rate for the four previous
years is listed below: 2008 – 555 per 10,000, 2007 – 558 per 10,000, 2006 – 562 per 10,000, 2005 – 635 per 10,000. In 2009, there were 27 homicides, 16 of which were gang related compared
to 25 homicides in 2008, 7 of which were gang related. In 2009, there were decreases in reported rapes, robberies, burglaries, larceny and auto theft. There was a slight increase of
1.8% in aggravated assaults. The Bakersfield Police Department is committed to reducing crime in our community. As part of this effort, we will continue to focus on gang related crime;
use crime analysis to more rapidly identify trends or developing crime trends and focus on those areas to help reduce the number of crimes committed; and we will continue our work to
build relationships with the community which is a vital part of any crime prevention/reduction effort. ###
