The overall crime rate in 2009 was 530 reported crimes per 10,000 citizens. The overall crime rate for the four previous years is listed below: 2008 – 555 per 10,000, 2007 – 558 per 10,000, 2006 – 562 per 10,000, 2005 – 635 per 10,000. In 2009, there were 27 homicides, 16 of which were gang related compared to 25 homicides in 2008, 7 of which were gang related. In 2009, there were decreases in reported rapes, robberies, burglaries, larceny and auto theft. There was a slight increase of 1.8% in aggravated assaults. The Bakersfield Police Department is committed to reducing crime in our community. As part of this effort, we will continue to focus on gang related crime; use crime analysis to more rapidly identify trends or developing crime trends and focus on those areas to help reduce the number of crimes committed; and we will continue our work to build relationships with the community which is a vital part of any crime prevention/reduction effort. ###
