HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010_01_29_Officer Involved Shooting BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police ________________________________________________________________________ Contact: Sergeant Mary Degeare Public Information Officer 661-326-3803 mdegeare@bakersfieldpd.us For Immediate Release Saturday, January 30, 2010 Officer Involved Shooting On 1/29/10, at 8:48 p.m. Bakersfield Police received a report of shots being fired at the intersection of Haley Street and Kentucky Street. As officers arrived in the area they heard shots continuing to be fired. The officers approached the intersection on foot and confronted a group of subjects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, standing outside an apartment at 1330 Kentucky Street. An officer ordered the subject with the gun to drop it and he responded by pointing the gun in the direction of the officers. An officer fired several shots at the subject who then turned and ran a short distance, discarded the firearm, and surrendered. He was not injured as a result of the shooting and was taken into custody without further incident. A 9mm handgun was recovered. Several other males and females were detained at the scene. Multiple casings from several different firearms were recovered on the ground outside the apartments. A search warrant was served at an apartment at 1330 Kentucky Street. As a result of this search a .22 caliber rifle and additional ammunition was recovered. Further investigation led to the arrest of four suspects. They are identified as: Fernando Mariano Amaya, 21, of Bakersfield, charged with Brandishing a firearm at a Peace Officer, Negligent discharge of a firearm, Conspiracy, and various other weapons and gang related charges. Victor Antonio Amaya, 23, of Bakersfield, charged with various weapons and gang related charges. Both suspects were transported and booked into the Kern County Jail. Two male juveniles, ages 13 and 17, were also arrested on various weapons and gang related charges. They were booked into the Kern County Juvenile Hall. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation is continuing.
