HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010_04_28_OIS South Alley 1500 block Niles Street BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police ________________________________________________________________________ Contact: Sergeant Mary DeGeare Public Information Officer 661-326-3803 mdegeare@Bakersfieldpd.us For Immediate Release April 28, 2010 On 4/28/10, at about 1:00 a.m., partnered Officers Jess Beagley and Felipe Juarez were traveling east on Monterey Street when they observed a grey 2003 Hyundai also traveling east on Monterey Street. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation and the driver, Luis Montenegro 29, continued east on Monterey Street until it merges into Niles Street then turned south onto Williams Street and stopped adjacent to the south alley 1500 block of Niles Street. Luis Montenegro and the back seat passenger, James Roybal 29, remained in the vehicle, however, the front seat passenger, Saddam Banuelos Mohamed 30, exited the passenger side and ran westbound in the alley. As Mohamed exited the car, both officers observed him to have what they described as a chrome handgun in his hand. Officer Juarez remained at the vehicle stop, detaining Montenegro and Roybal, as Officer Beagley pursued Mohamed. As Mohamed ran into the alley, he turned back toward Officer Beagley several times as he ran and pointed the handgun at him. Officer Beagley fired his duty weapon at Mohamed multiple times, striking him once in the upper thigh. Mohamed went down and Officer Beagley held him at gunpoint until assisting officers arrived and he was taken into custody. Montenegro and Roybal were taken into custody without further incident. A nickel plated handgun was located in the yard at 1216 Williams Street adjacent to the alley. Mohamed was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest, participation in a criminal street gang, conspiracy, possession of a loaded firearm, ex-felon in possession of a hand gun, gang member in possession of a hand gun and possession of an unregistered weapon. Mohamed was taken to a local hospital. Montenegro was arrested for participation in a criminal street gang, conspiracy, weapons charges related to the handgun Mohamed possessed and being an unlicensed driver. Roybal was arrested for participation in a criminal street gang, conspiracy, weapons charges related to the handgun Mohamed possessed, providing false identifying information to a peace officer and violation of parole. Officer Beagley was placed on routine administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation and review. Officer Beagley has been with the Bakersfield Police Department for five years.
