Assistant Chief Lyle Martin provided an update on Gang Enforcement. Year to date, the
gang unit made 203 felony arrests and seized 47 firearms. There were 9 gang related
shootings compared to 13 in 2009 and 1 1 in 2008. Currently, the focus of the Gang Unit
will be gun seizure and search warrants of paroled probationers.
Captain Joe Bianco reported that the department received its third CalGrip award in the
amount of $382,000. This award is unique in that it employs multiple entities working in the
intervention and prevention aspect, including, Kern County Network for Children and
Kern County Superintendant of Schools. All parties have entered into an agreement to
participate in an advisory council and guidance council to deliver services to the most
affected parts of the City where gang shootings occur. Committee Chair Irma Carson
asked how will the advisory group be selected. Assistant Chief Martin responded that the
advisory members will be selected at the next Joint City/County Gang Task Force
Committee meeting.
B. Report on Kern County Probation Activities- Chief Probation Officer Kuge 12:16:16 PM
Susan Lerude of Kern County Probation reported that the department is currently
combating budgetary issues related to a 20% step-down. The Repeat Offender
Prevention Program will be dismantled on June 30, 2010 due to assessment.com, used to
focus on moderate to high offenders, and the department's inability to match the grant
funds. Ms. Lerude also reported that the week of April 181" is Victim Awareness Week. For
this event, the department is requesting nominations for recognition.
