HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010_08_23_Javier Guzman Ortiz BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police ________________________________________________________________________ Contact: Sergeant Mary DeGeare Public Information Officer 661-326-3803 mdegeare@Bakersfieldpd.us FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 23, 2010 On 8/23/10, at about 11:15 a.m., the Bakersfield Police Department was contacted by the Bakersfield College Public Safety Office regarding a man who was detained in one of the women’s restrooms on campus. Javier Guzman-Ortiz 19 was discovered secretly videotaping an unsuspecting 28 year old female student using the restroom from an adjacent stall. When the woman realized what was taking place, she exited the restroom and notified a staff member who immediately detained Guzman-Ortiz while he was still in the restroom. Campus security detained Guzman-Ortiz until police arrived. Guzman-Ortiz was still in possession of the camera but had deleted the contents. Investigation revealed that Guzman-Ortiz entered the public restroom within the Speech Arts and Music (SAM) building and hid inside the handicapped stall then waited for women to enter an adjoining stall and videotaped them. Guzman-Ortiz videotaped another woman just moments before he was detected by the second victim. The first woman has not yet been identified or contacted by police. She was described by Guzman-Ortiz as a Caucasian female 19-20 years old, slender with blonde hair wearing shorts and black boots. She is encouraged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 326-3855. Guzman-Ortiz was arrested for loitering in or about any public restroom for the purpose of engaging in an unlawful act and an additional charge related to secretly recording the women without their knowledge or consent for the purpose of gratification in a location where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. Guzman-Ortiz is not a student at Bakersfield College.
