On 9/14/10, at 2:40 p.m., the Bakersfield Police Department arrested Torrance Latrell Kendricks 29 for the attempted murder of his mother, Joanne Oliva 53. Earlier, at about 1:30 p.m., Bakersfield Police officers responded to a report of a male choking a female, at Wenatchee Avenue and Columbus Street. While officers were en route, the police department received a call of a hit and run accident at Wenatchee Avenue and Crest Drive. Officers were unable to locate a male choking a female at Wenatchee Avenue and Columbus Street and responded to Wenatchee Avenue and Crest Drive where they found Oliva on the sidewalk suffering from major injuries. Witnesses who remained at the scene reported that a vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk and ran over Oliva and then drove away. The man choking the female was described as a Black Male 30 – 35 years old, 5’11” tall, 220 pounds, having a muscular build and shaved or short cut hair, wearing sunglasses and a white shirt. Two vehicles leaving the scene of the hit and run were described as a Silver SUV and Maroon SUV. Through witness and crime analysis information investigators determined Kendrick’s was responsible for the assault. He was located and arrested for attempted murder, carjacking, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, felony vandalism and attempted escape. The maroon SUV was determined to be the vehicle involved in the assault and was located by investigators. The subject in the silver SUV may be a witness. Although some witnesses were contacted, others called but did not leave enough information for investigators to contact and interview them. The Bakersfield Police Department is urging any person who observed any part of the assault or interaction between Kendricks and Oliva which led to the assault to call Detective Martin Heredia at 326-3873.
