When officers arrived, they observed a 28 year old woman running on Highway 58. When officers tried to contact the woman, she ran to the north side of 58 where it crosses over Oswell Street and climbed on the cement guard rail, then sat with her feet dangling over the edge. As officers approached, the woman tensed as if she was preparing to jump off the overcrossing onto Oswell Street below. Officers Shannon Davis and Johnny Ramirez tried to engage her in conversation while other police and CHP officers shut down traffic on both roadways. As Officer Davis and Ramirez, who were west of her location, continued to talk to her, Senior Officer Eric Schimon approached her from the opposite direction. Officer Davis spoke to the woman and tried tactics to lure her away from the edge for several minutes with no avail; therefore, Officer Schimon tossed his baton on the ground behind and to the west of the woman, diverting her attention long enough for Officer Schimon to grab her from behind and pull her to safety. The woman had several stab wounds to her abdomen which were either self inflicted or the result of an assault. The woman was taken to Kern Medical Center for a medical treatment and a psychological evaluation. The investigation into her injuries is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Department.
