The City of Bakersfield has received funds from State of California Proposition 1C Bonds to make improvements on “Q” Street between Truxtun Avenue and 24th Street. These improvements will include landscaped median islands, new decorative lights and trees in the sidewalk, new sidewalks, alley cross gutters and handicapped ramps at all corners. Enhanced intersections at Truxtun, 18th, 19th and 21st streets will include new decorative traffic signals and decorative intersections. In addition there will be some improvements on the cross streets, which will blend the new “Q” Street design into the existing streets. I invite you to meet with City staff members to learn more about these improvements. An open house will be held on Monday, January 10 from 2:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m. at Bakersfield Convention and Visitor Bureau, 515 Truxtun Avenue. You can see what is being proposed and have the chance to ask questions. While the state funds will pay for the installation of these improvements, a maintenance district needs to be established to pay for the ongoing maintenance of the “Q” Street improvements. This is similar to how other streetscape improvements in Bakersfield are maintained. You will not be assessed for these improvements until they are completed. At that time, the assessment for your property noted under your mailing address at the top of this letter is estimated to be $(amount) each year. We are fortunate to have received these state bond funds to improve the appearance of downtown. I believe that you will share our enthusiasm for the streetscape improvements that will benefit the appearance of the “Q” Street area. In early 2011, you will have the opportunity to vote to form such a maintenance district. In the meantime, I hope you can attend the open house on January 10. If you cannot attend, feel free to call Donna Barnes in my office at (661) 326-3765 to learn more about these plans. Thank you for your positive consideration of this exciting project. Sincerely, Donna L. Kunz Economic Development Director
