HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011_08_29_Check Point results BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT 1601 Truxtun Avenue Bakersfield, CA (661) 326-3815 PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 29, 2011 On Friday, August 26, 2011 the Bakersfield Police Department and Kern AVOID the 18 coalition teamed to conducted DUI / Drivers License Checkpoints in the northbound and southbound lanes of the 200 blk of Union Ave. between the hours of 7:00 PM and 1:00 AM. As a result of this unified enforcement event a total of 2170 vehicles passed through both checkpoints; 1861 of those vehicles were screened by officers; a total of 96 vehicles were impounded; 72 motorists were issued citations for unlicensed driver; 21 motorists were issued citations for driving on a suspended/revoked drivers license; 2 motorists were issued citations for miscellaneous vehicle code violations; 18 motorists were asked to perform field sobriety tests to determine their level of intoxication; of the 18 motorists asked to perform these tests, eight (8) were subsequently arrested and charged with DUI. One (1) of those eight (8) arrested had at least one prior DUI arrest and conviction within the past ten (10) years. Officers from the Bakersfield Police Department and California Highway Patrol working a DUI Saturation Patrol during the same time throughout the City of Bakersfield arrested eleven (11) additional motorists for drunken driving. Those DUI offenders were also processed through the checkpoint Command Post and subsequently booked into the Kern County Main Jail. One adult male driver was arrested for driving on a suspended or revoked license and possession of a controlled substance, after officers discovered he was in possession of a useable amount of suspected Methamphetamine. These DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints are in an effort to reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in DUI related collisions. A major component of this enforcement event is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. ###
