PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 29, 2011
On Sunday, August 28, 2011 the Bakersfield Police
Department conducted a city wide Motorcycle Safety / DUI
Saturation Patrol between the hours of 11:00 AM and 5:00
PM. Officers targeted motorcycle riders and motorists
displaying possible impairment, and who violated rules of
the road that tend to lead to injury and fatal collisions
involving motorcycle riders.
As a result of this enforcement effort, at total of 39 drivers
and motorcyclists were stopped by officers, 30 of those
drivers or riders were cited for violations which included
operating a motorcycle without a DOT approved helmet,
speeding, running red lights and use of cellular telephone
while driving. None of the drivers or motorcyclists stopped
by officers displayed symptoms of impairment.
This Motorcycle Safety Saturation Patrol is in an effort to
reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in
motorcycle and DUI related collisions. A major component
of this enforcement event is to increase awareness of the
dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober
designated drivers.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the
California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is
encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they
see a suspected impaired driver.
