HomeMy WebLinkAboutFireChief 2010 City Manager’s Office PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Alan Tandy, City Manager Friday, October 15, 2010 (661) 326-3751 Deputy Fire Chief Doug Greener Selected to Lead Bakersfield Fire Department City Manager Alan Tandy has announced the promotion of Douglas R. Greener to succeed recently retired Fire Chief Ron Fraze. Greener, a twenty-two year veteran with the Bakersfield Fire Department, most recently served as a Deputy Fire Chief, overseeing Operations for the past three years. Greener graduated from Bakersfield College with an Associate of Arts degree in Fire Science in 1998. He then continued his education at California State University -Bakersfield, completing his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2004, with a major in Public Policy. He obtained a Master’s Degree in 2007, also in Public Policy. His entire professional career has been devoted to fire service and public safety. He began as a Fire Explorer in 1982 with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and later became a reserve officer. In 1984, he was hired as a firefighter with the City of Taft; he was promoted to Fire Engineer and also served as an Acting Fire Captain while there. His career with the Bakersfield Fire Department began in 1988, when he was hired as a firefighter. He subsequently progressed through the ranks of supervisory and management positions as a Fire Engineer, Fire Captain, Suppression Battalion Chief, Administrative Battalion Chief, to his most recent position of Deputy Fire Chief. Commenting on his selection of Greener as the City’s new Fire Chief, City Manager Alan Tandy said, “Doug has a straightforward communication style and has demonstrated strong leadership qualities. In these challenging times, I believe those attributes will serve both the City and the employees of the Fire Department well. I look forward to working with Chief Greener and his team.” A special ceremony to recognize Chief Greener’s promotion will be held on Monday, October 18th at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 1501 Truxtun Avenue.
