Home My WebLink About2011_09_02_Wanted for Theft by scam_156765 BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police For Immediate Release September 2, 2011 The Bakersfield Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in identifying a suspect wanted for grand theft by scam. On 8/2/11, the victim was approached by the suspect at Fallas Store, 2300 White Lane. The suspect told the victim she needed cash because her husband was in the hospital with serious injuries and she was selling “gold bars” in exchange for money to pay the hospital bill. The victim believed the “gold bars” were real because a 3rd party (believed to be part of the scam) became involved and offered to sell the “gold bars” for her at a jewelry store. She agreed and held the man’s wallet as collateral while he was gone with the “gold bars”. The man returned a short time later with a large amount of cash. Wanting to help the woman, the victim took the woman to her bank and withdrew a large amount of cash which she gave to the woman in exchange for a “gold bar”. The victim later learned the object was not actually gold and realized she had been victimized by scam artists. The female suspect was described as Hispanic female 30s, 5’2” tall, 190 pounds with neck length dyed blonde curly hair. She is depicted in the attached video surveillance camera photo, captured at the bank. The male suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, 6’0” tall, 200 pounds, short dark clean cut hair, wearing hospital scrubs. Anyone with information regarding the identity the female suspect in the photo is encouraged to call Detective Watts at 326-3543.
