Kern AVOID the 18, Coordinator 661.326.3896 mbjohnso@bakersfieldpd.us SUMMER/LABOR DAY AVOID DUI CAMPAIGN – SATURDAY DUI Arrests Continue The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 18 DUI deployments overnight in Kern County. From 6:00 PM Friday August 19, 2011 through 6:00 AM Saturday morning September 3, 2011 officers representing Kern County law enforcement agencies have arrested approximately 168 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Eleven (11) of those arrests coming last night as a result of an AVOID DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint conducted in the 2300 blk of Mt. Vernon Ave., and Roving Saturation Patrol conducted in Bakersfield between the hours of 7 PM and 1 AM. Tragically, there have been 3 lives lost due to traffic fatalities; however, none appear at this point to involve alcohol or drugs. There were a total of 9 lives lost on Kern County roadways during this same time period in 2010, 2 of those due to impaired driving. For the final three nights of the Labor Day Holiday weekend checkpoints are planned for the greater Bakersfield area, and Wasco. Extra DUI Saturation Patrols will be deployed in the cities throughout Kern County. All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. The CHP is deploying all available officers onto freeways and county roads during their Maximum Enforcement Period this weekend. Police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage all motorists to help make your community safer: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
