HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011_10_24_Central Cali Market Shooting Update BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police Update October 24, 2011 The previously mentioned interviews which required a certified interpreter have been completed and the investigation is continuing. Investigators are still searching for two witnesses who were in or around the store when the shooting occurred. They are described as a Caucasian or Hispanic female with long dark hair and glasses whose image is depicted below; and her companion, who is described as a Black male. Both of them arrived at the store on bicycles prior to the shooting and departed afterward. Anyone with information related to their identities is urged to call Detective Jeff Saso at 326-3535. Second Release October 20, 2011 The investigation into the shooting deaths of Efrem Wandick and David Lyons at the Central Cali Market and Grocery on 10/18/11 is still ongoing. Several factors have slowed the flow of information including inaccurate rumors, injuries and a language barrier. Although basic information has been forthcoming, it has to be accurately interpreted. Investigators are working with the District Attorney’s office to locate a court certified interpreter before continuing with those interviews. Investigators are also aware of additional unidentified witnesses who were present during the incident and are requesting those individuals come forward. Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Jeff Saso at 326-3535 or the Secret Witness Hotline at 322-4040. We understand emotions are running high regarding the situation and are asking the community in the area to be patient with the pace of the investigation. Original Release October 19, 2011 On 10/18/11, at 11:23 p.m., Bakersfield Police officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired at the Central Cali Market and Grocery, 801 E. California Avenue. Upon arrival officers located two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds to the front of the store. The investigation revealed the men were involved in a dispute with the store clerk. During a physical altercation, the clerk fired several shots striking both men. One man was declared deceased at the scene. The other man died at a local hospital. The identities of both men are being held pending release by coroner. The investigation is ongoing. You can now send an anonymous text message to the Bakersfield Police Department.
