Subject: UST Removal Closure Report
Yaussy Property
489 Garnsey Avenue
Bakersfield, California
aMr. Wines:
Soils Engineering,Inc. (SEI)has completed the removal and closure of one(1)underground storage
tank (UST) located at the Yaussy Residence with an address of 489 Garnsey in Bakersfield, CA
(site). See Plate 1 for Location Map. The UST was located adjacent to the northwestern edge of the
adrive way on the property. See the former UST location on the attached Plot Plan (Plate 2).
]Background
The subject site consists of the Yaussy residence, driveway, landscaping and a pool. This work was
conducted in accordance with a Bakersfield Fire Department Office of Prevention Services (BFD)
UST removal permit #TR-353. This Report includes analytical results from the soil samples
a collected beneath the former UST,a sample location map,and conclusions and recommendations for
the site. See Plate 1 for a Location Map, Plate 2 for a Plot Plan and Plate 3 for a sampling map.
Field Work Conducted
On May 1,2009,one 500-gallon diesel fuel UST was uncovered and removed under permit TR-353
(see attached)obtained from the BFD. The tank top was approximately 3'below ground surface and
was empty of significant fluids. Twenty-pounds of dry ice was placed into the tank A lower
explosion level (LEL)meter was on site to determine hydrocarbon vapors and oxygen levels. The
LEL levels and oxygen levels were at safe concentrations prior to removal. A backhoe was used to
remove the UST, which was placed on a truck, marked and transported to Sierra Recycling for
disposal/recycling(see attached UST Tank Certification Form). During removal,it was discovered
a that the tank had a few small holes in the bottom. Some staining was evident on the southern portion
of the tank excavation.
Soil samples were collected with a hand-auger at approximate depths of 2' and 6'beneath the bottom
of the former UST location. The soil samples (T1-2' and T1-6') were sealed in stainless steel
sleeves, capped with Teflon-lined plastic caps, labeled and placed in a cooler with blue ice. The soil

samples were delivered to BC Labs for analysis of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH)as gasoline
(TPHg) and as diesel (TPHd), total lead and Purgeable Aromatics including benzene, toluene,
' ethylbenzene,total xylenes(BTEX)and MTBE by EPA Methods 8015m(Luft/Luft/TPHd),6010B
and 8021B, respectively.
' The excavation was backfilled with clean fill and compacted to match existing grade.
FINDINGS
The analytical results of the soil samples are shown on Table 1 and indicate that no significant
concentrations of Lead,TPHg,BTEX,or MTBE were present in the soil samples collected beneath
' the UST. Soil sample T1-2' had 8000 mg/kg TPHd reported,which decreased to only 24 mg/kg in
sample T1-6'. See attached analytical report for more detail.
' Conclusions & Recommendations
Based on field observations and analytical results of soil samples collected during this investigation
SEI concludes the following:
' 1) The former 500 gallon diesel UST has been successful) removed per BFD regulations.
g Y p g
' 2) Diesel stained soil was observed directly beneath the UST, but does not extend beyond a
depth of 6' below the former tank location. This minor amount of diesel impacted soil does
' not contain elevated concentrations of BTEX or lead. Therefore, this diesel-impacted soil is
not considered a threat to the site occupants.
3) Groundwater in this area of Bakersfield is reported to be greater than 180'below the ground
surface. Therefore, this diesel-impacted soil is not considered a threat to the groundwater
beneath the site.
' Based on the above information, SEI recommends the closure of this UST site with no additional
assessment or remedial action recommended in the area of the former UST, beyond covering the
' former UST area with asphalt pavement to prevent water infiltration.
If you have any questions concerning this report, please contact SEI at (661) 831-5100.
' Sincerely,
DNME
