HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012_01_17_Critical Incident Review BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE Greg Williamson, Chief of Police Contact: Sergeant Mary DeGeare Bakersfield Police Department (661)326-3803 For Immediate Release Tuesday, January 17, 2012 On 1/13/12, the Bakersfield Police Department Critical Incident Review Board met and reviewed the facts and circumstances surrounding the traffic collision involving Officer Peter Beagley on 8/26/11, wherein bicyclist, Samuel Dohn Boyd 51, collided with the officers’ car and subsequently died from the injuries he sustained from the collision. The accident investigation determined the cause of the accident to be Boyd riding a bicycle while intoxicated and committing an unsafe turning movement across two lanes of traffic, directly in to the officer’s path. After reviewing the findings of the administrative investigation, the Critical Incident Review Board concluded that Officer Beagley’s as well as the other responding officers’ actions were within department policy and within state and federal guidelines. The Review Board consisted of Assistant Chief Lyle Martin, Captain Robert Bivens, Captain Hajir Nuriddin and Captain Michael Payne. Police Chief Greg Williamson has reviewed the investigation and concurred with the Review Board’s findings. Original Release Friday, August 26, 2011 On 8/26/11, at approximately 12:46 p.m., an on-duty Bakersfield police officer driving an unmarked police vehicle was involved in an injury accident with a bicyclist in the 200 block of ‘H’ Street. The police officer was driving north on ‘H’ Street and the bicyclist was riding north on ‘H’ Street along the east curb line. As they traveled north the bicyclist suddenly turned left and attempted to ride west across ‘H’ Street directly in the path of the officer’s vehicle. The officer was unable to stop and a collision occurred. The bicyclist sustained major injuries and was transported to Kern Medical Center where he died. The identity of the bicyclist will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office. The officer was not injured. The collision investigation is being conducted by the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Division. As per department policy an administrative investigation is also being conducted. The officer is identified as Officer Peter Beagley. Officer Beagley has been with the police department for six years. Officer Beagley has been returned to duty. This investigation is continuing.
