2011 Crime Statistics
For the sixth consecutive year, the overall crime rate in the City of Bakersfield fell when compared to the
previous year.
The overall crime rate in 2011 was 475 reported crimes per 10,000 citizens.
Violent crime decreased by 11.3% and total property crime decreased by 2.3%.
In 2011, there were 18 homicides, 8 of which were gang related compared to 32 homicides in 2010, 12 of
which were gang related.
Additional decreases were seen in aggravated assault at 9.7%, robbery at 14.5%, larceny at 4.5% and
auto theft at 2.4%.
An increase was experienced in the rape category which was up by five offenses, from 34 in 2010 to 39 in
2011. Out of the 39; eight were committed by strangers, seven occurred in prior years but reported in
2011, and seven were unsuccessful attempts.
There was also a slight increase in burglary which was up 2%.
The overall crime rate for the six previous years is listed below:

2010 – 510 per 10,000
2009 – 530 per 10,000
2008 – 555 per 10,000
2007 – 558 per 10,000
2006 – 562 per 10,000
2005 – 635 per 10,000
The Bakersfield Police Department is committed to reducing crime in our community. As part of this effort,
we will continue to focus on gang related crime; use crime analysis to more rapidly identify trends or
developing crime trends and focus on those areas to help reduce the number of crimes committed; and
we will continue our work to build relationships with the community which is a vital part of any crime
prevention/reduction effort.
