PRESS RELEASE
BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT
NEWS RELEASE
May 12, 2012
On Friday, May 11th, 2012 the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail
conducted a mobile DUI / Driver License Checkpoint in the 200 block of Union Avenue between
the hours of 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
A total of 1810 vehicles passed through the location with 1590 of those being screened with the
following results:
• 8 DUI arrests, 4 of which had priors
• 49 drivers were found not have a valid driver’s license
• 20 drivers were found to have a suspended license
• 40 vehicles were impounded
Of the 49 unlicensed drivers that officers contacted, 42 met the criteria of CVC 2814.2. Officers
were able to contact 33 registered owners of the held vehicles and subsequently released them to
the registered owner/licensed driver prior to the conclusion of the checkpoint.
This DUI/Driver License Checkpoint was part of a series of enforcement and education efforts
throughout the upcoming year that the Bakersfield Police Department will conduct in an effort to
reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in DUI related collisions. A major
component of this enforcement event is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving
and to encourage sober, designated drivers.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety
(OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The public is
encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
