For Immediate Release May 14, 2012
On 5/14/12, at 9:08 a.m., officers responded to a keep the peace/check the welfare at
8317 White Squall Lane #4. Officers Deron Miller and Robert Whaley met with the
reporting party, who indicated she resided there with her mother Dena Springstead 48,
and Edward Fiad 43.
Bakersfield police officers had responded to a peace disturbance, involving the three,
on Sunday night which resulted in Springstead’s arrest for public intoxication. Police
attempted to contact Fiad then, but he would not answer the door. The reporting party
left at that point and spent the night elsewhere. She returned this morning and
requested the police standby while she obtained personal items. She said Fiad was
armed the previous evening and she was afraid of him.
The reporting party opened the door to the apartment and immediately saw Fiad seated
in a chair just inside the door, armed with a hand gun and she ran away. The officers
also observed Fiad armed with a handgun and began yelling commands for Fiad to put
down the gun but he refused. Officer Miller fired his handgun striking Fiad multiple
times. Fiad was transported to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Miller is a 13 year veteran and has been placed on routine administrative leave.
