For Immediate Release May 17, 2012
On 5/16/12, at about 8:52 p.m., a woman at 3307 Panama Street reported that her
former boyfriend, Jose Machado 29, whom she has a restraining order against, walked
into her residence, took her car keys and her car without permission.
On 5/17/12, at about 3:45 p.m., officers patrolling the neighborhood located the stolen
car about a block from the woman’s house. Suspecting Machado had returned to 3307
Panama Street, they responded to the house in an attempt to locate and arrest him.
One officer knocked on the front door, which was already slightly ajar, and as the door
swung open a large pit bull emerged from inside. The pit bull charged toward the
officer, who backed away and drew his weapon. As the dog continued toward him, the
officer fired one time at the dog and it retreated into the house. The dog received a
minor scrape to one of his paws; however, either a bullet fragment or fragments from
the cement porch surface flew up and struck another officer in the neck. The injury
appears to be minor. Machado who was hiding in one of the bedrooms quickly
surrendered. He was booked into the Kern County Jail for auto theft and violation of a
restraining order. The officer was taken to a local hospital.
