“Call-ins”
In April of 2010, the Bakersfield Police Department initiated the Bakersfield Safe Streets
Partnership (BSSP), a Safe Community Partnership (SCP) strategy. Under the SCP, active
gang members are invited to participate in “call-ins” where they hear the community’s demand
to stop the violence as well as a message of concern for the gang members and a willingness to
help them through social services. BSSP began holding Call-In sessions in October of
2010.
Five “call-ins” have been held in 2012 (April, May, June, September, November). We are still
seeing between 60%-75% attendance by the gang members.
Peace Walks
Community Peace Walks have been held in September, October, and November. The Peace
Walks are held in neighborhoods affected by gang violence. Their purpose is to educate and
encourage those who are willing to take a stand against gang violence and to connect residents
and families to community resources available as alternatives to gang activity. The peace walks
are being led by community organizations and supported by all members of the Bakersfield Safe
Streets Partnership.
