Miscellaneous News
• We have received our CalPERS rates for next fiscal year as well as projected rates for
the following two fiscal years. This is year three of a three year plan by CalPERS to
smooth in higher rates after experiencing unprecedented investment losses in recent
years. The budgetary impact of the increases is estimated to be $1 million city wide
for next year. Future year projected rates show increases for all plans as well – but
these figures are preliminary in nature and may not reflect what our actual rates will
be in FY 2014-15 or 15-16. A memo with more details from Finance Director Nelson
Smith is enclosed.
• Public Works staff has completed Phase I of the curbside recycling program
implementation. Approximately 7,000 new blue carts were added during this phase.
A memo with more details from Public Works Director Raul Rojas is enclosed.
• Congratulations are due to Public Works, Recreation and Parks and Community
Development staff, as we learned this week the American Society of Civil Engineers
selected the Mill Creek Linear Park for the Outstanding Community Improvement
Project Award for 2012. ASCE Region 9 Project Awards recognize outstanding Civil
Engineering projects throughout the state of California. The award will be presented
to staff in March.
• I will be out of the office next Thursday afternoon and Friday to attend the Large City
Executive forum in Las Vegas. Steve Teglia will be in charge during my absence and
I will have contact via my cell phone and e-mail as necessary.
