On January 17th, 2013, members of the Bakersfield Police
Department/Kern County Sheriff’s Department Joint Vice Task Force
(JVTF) and California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control conducted
a prostitution suppression operation. This operation was a reverse sting,
“John Sting.” “John” refers to an individual who solicits a prostitute for a
sexual act in exchange for money or other item of value. Seventeen
arrests were made for solicitation of prostitution. One of the arrestees was
also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale,
Transportation of a Controlled Substance, and Parole Violation.
The operation was conducted on Union Avenue, in the area of
establishments licensed by the California Department of Alcoholic
Beverage Control. This area is known to have a high rate of prostitution
related activity. This area is also near residential neighborhoods and other
businesses. There have been numerous complaints received regarding
prostitution activity in this area.
