OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
January 25, 2013
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager AT/ch
SUBJECT: General Information
We held the budget preparation kick off meeting with staff this week. As I
presented to you in the mid-year budget report, our own revenues are on a slight
incline. However, predatory actions by the State and County could negate that –
making financial planning problematic, as the threat amounts come close to the
revenue growth numbers.
Miscellaneous News
• The Mill House project near17th St and the canal is coming along very nicely. The
enclosed pictures show work being done at the site earlier this week.
• To encourage spending by visitors and residents for Valentine’s Day, the
Bakersfield Convention and Visitors Bureau has kicked off its Romance and Relax
promotion that features specials from hotels, museums, and other local amenities.
The promotion will run from February 9 through February 16. A news release is
attached.
TRIP News
Nighttime lane closures originally planned for January 24, 2013 on State Route 58,
between Real Road and the Cottonwood Road interchange, have been
rescheduled for Sunday, January 27, 2013. Motorists are advised to anticipate
eastbound and westbound lane closures for this section of State Route 58 to
continue at night through the next two weeks. The closures will remain in effect
between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. At least one lane will remain open
to both westbound and eastbound traffic at all times. All lanes are expected to
reopen in time for the morning commute. Shoulder closures may also be required
while work is underway. The closures will allow crews to drill for soil samples in
support of the preliminary engineering and environmental work underway for the
Centennial Corridor Project.
The contractor for the Westside Parkway is continuing nighttime lane closures
near the intersection of Coffee Road/Brimhall Road on January 27-29, 2013. The
lane closures will affect alternating lanes between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., as the contractor continues work on a storm drain installation in the area. The

lane closures will occur through the intersection, and to the west on Brimhall
Road. At least one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic at all times.
All lanes will be reopened in time for the morning commute.

Bakersfield CVB Announces Valentine’s Romance and Relax Specials
BAKERSFIELD, Calf. - Valentine's Day is almost here. The Bakersfield Convention and Visitors Bureau is
kicking off its Romance and Relax promotion for lovers everywhere. Those with romance on their mind will
be looking for ways to share time with that special someone, and the Romance and Relax promotion offers
some money saving ideas. Several local hotels are offering romantic specials. Everything from complimentary chocolate-dipped
strawberries and sparkling wine, to hotel restaurant credits, hot tub rooms and, yes, even late check-out.
A local restaurant is offering a free Valentine’s dinner just for singles. And two local museums are offering Valentine’s specials.
For details on the Romance and Relax promotion, log onto VisitBakersfield.com/specials.
This year, Valentine’s Day is on a Thursday so the promotion will run all week from Saturday, February 9 through Saturday, February 16. And when you think about it, it makes sense that we celebrate Cupid for an entire week. After all, love is too big for just one day.
