The Part 1 crime rate per 10,000 individuals in 2012 is comparable to 2008 being 555 crimes per 10,000 citizens. The overall crime rate for the previous five years is listed below: 2011 — 475 per 10,000 2010 — 510 per 10,000 2009 — 530 per 10,000 2008 — 555 per 10,000 2007 — 558 per 10,000 In 2012, there were 34 homicides, 15 of which were gang related. In 2012, there were 1,141 aggravated assaults, a 9.5% decrease compared to 2011. There was an increase in the following reported crimes from 2011 to 2012: Rape 43.6%, Larceny 17.4%, Auto Theft 35.7%, Robbery 23.4% and Burglary 15.6%. The Bakersfield Police Department is committed to reducing crime in our community. In an effort to combat crime, the Bakersfield Police Department will proactively and aggressively pursue gang related crimes and use crime analysis to identify crime trends. The Bakersfield Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will continue to establish a positive working relationship with the community to effectively educate the city on preventative safety techniques and encourage the collaboration between the police department and the public.
