For Immediate Release April 24, 2013
In conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,
the Bakersfield Police Department partnered with the United States Federal Probation Office,
the Kern County Probation Department, and California Department of Corrections and
Rehabilitation Parole Division, to conduct a sex offender compliance and warrant sweep in the
City of Bakersfield.
On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at approximately 6:30 a.m., sixteen teams composed of law
enforcement officers from these respective agencies, attempted to contact 189 registered sex
offenders within the jurisdiction of the city of Bakersfield, to determine if they were in compliance
with their sex registrant status. All targeted subjects in the compliance checks have prior
arrests and convictions for various sexual offenses, some of which involve crimes of violence.
Of the subjects contacted, 149 were found to be in compliance with the terms of their
registration. The Bakersfield Police Department will be submitting criminal complaints to the
Kern County District Attorney’s Office for 27 additional individuals who failed to comply with the
terms of their registration status. During the operation a total of 22 people were arrested, 11 of
which were felony arrests and 11 of which were misdemeanor arrests. The arrests included
subjects that were in violation of the terms of their registration status, as well as additional
subjects that were contacted during the compliance check.
California Penal Code 290, also known as the Sex Offender Registration Act, requires any
individual convicted to register with the local law enforcement agency in his/her jurisdiction,
every year on his/her birthday and any time he/she moves to another address to register his/her
current address.
