HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/07/2013 OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER June 7, 2013 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager AT/al SUBJECT: General Information Miscellaneous News  Congratulations to Willie Rivera on his election to fill the Ward 1 seat! We will begin to provide him with all information normally flowing to the City Council as we await the County’s certification of the election results. After that is accomplished, we will schedule his swearing-in ceremony.  The current one year lease/operational agreement between the City and County, regarding the sheltering of stray and otherwise unwanted animals, is set to expire on June 30, 2013. You may recall that this agreement provides for the County’s lease of City owned land where the County’s Mount Vernon shelter is located as well as annual compensation payable from the City to the County for housing the animals referenced above. Through meetings of the Metro Bakersfield Animal Control Committee, the City and County agreed on a future master plan which would include the development of new facilities over the course of the next couple years. In order to allow time for this to take place, the City and County verbally agreed to continue the current relationship for the next two years. To facilitate this, in early May, City staff provided the County with a draft two-year extension of the lease and operational agreement for review and comment. To date, the City has not received any feedback from the County. Recent staff efforts to urge the County to act appear to have fallen on deaf ears. While the current agreement does allow for a mutually agreed upon extension of its terms, through September 30th of this year, the silence from the County is troubling!  Local hotels and restaurants will again be busy this weekend. The Jehovah’s Witness Watchtower Convention returns to Rabobank Arena for the second of six weekends, beginning today (Friday). Each Watchtower Convention weekend brings about 6,000 delegates to Bakersfield. This weekend also will see the Metro Competitor Flag Football Union’s flag football regional and state championships underway at Kern County Soccer Park. This is the first time MCFFU has held an event in Bakersfield.  Completion of the Westside Parkway, Phase II is drawing near, as indicated by the street signs that are going up. Attached are a few pictures. As always, additional information can be found on the website: www.BakersfieldFreeways.us.
