On 6/6/13 at 1:22 p.m. Bakersfield Police Officer Seth Palmer was responding to an
emergency situation, with the emergency lights and siren activated on his patrol vehicle.
He was traveling southbound on Coffee Road, clearing the intersection of Rosedale
Highway when Joe Lopeteguy (74 years old), who was driving his 1997 Mazda 626
eastbound on Rosedale Highway, collided with Officer Palmer’s vehicle. After the initial
collision, the Mazda continued in a southeast direction and collided with a 2007
Chevrolet Silverado that was being driven by Robert Ortiz (54 years old) and was
stopped in the northbound lanes of Coffee Road on the south side of the intersection.
Joe Lopeteguy and his passenger, Betty Lopeteguy (74 years old) both had complaints
of pain and were taken to a local hospital. Officer Palmer had a complaint of pain and
was seen at a local doctor’s office. Robert Ortiz did not have any injuries. Officer
Palmer’s K-9 did not appear to sustain any injuries. There were no other passengers
involved. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
This collision is still under investigation.
