For Immediate Release July 3, 2013
The City of Bakersfield Animal Control Division would like to remind all pet owners to be
aware of their pets this 4th of July.
The 4th of July can be a frightening time for animals. Loud noises such as fireworks
often frighten or traumatize animals. Many pets may try to get loose and search for
security and/or shelter.
Below are a few steps to help save your pets a tremendous amount of fear and anxiety
this 4th of July:
• Keep pets indoors or confined in a secure area
• Do not tether an animal that is not used to being tethered – it can be dangerous,
if not deadly
• Double check all fences and gates to make sure pets cannot escape when
frightened
• Ensure your pets are wearing identification or are micro chipped. The
identification should include the name, current address and phone number of the
pet owner
• If leaving your pet at home, turn on a radio or television to distract your pet from
loud noises
• If your pet is prescribed medication for the holiday, do not leave your pet
unattended for long periods of time.
If your pet gets loose in the City of Bakersfield or Kern County, visit www.petharbor.com
or visit the shelter located at 201 Mount Vernon Avenue, during normal operating hours.
