City Offices will be closed next Thursday, July 4th, in observance of the Independence
Day holiday. Curbside trash and recycling services will be delayed one day.
Notable Items
➢ The City’s annual fireworks show will once again be held at the Spectrum
Amphitheatre on the July 4th holiday. The event features live entertainment, food
and beverage available for purchase, and the fireworks show beginning around
9:15 p.m. Parking is extremely limited for this event and will not be allowed in the
commercial district along Stockdale Highway or the vacant lot on the corner of
Stockdale & Buena Vista. Please see the attached press release for more
information.
➢ The Bakersfield Fire Department, in collaboration with the Bakersfield Police
Department wishes all a safe and fun holiday celebration. Please keep
knowledgeable of the types of fireworks that are illegal and be aware that the
Fireworks Taskforce will also be patrolling during July 3rd and 4th for illegal firework
activity. Check the Fire Department’s Facebook page for more public safety
information as the holiday nears.
➢ We hope to see you this Saturday June 29th at 8:00 a.m. for the Jastro Park
Pickleball/Tennis court complex opening. We have opted for an earlier time to keep
temperatures in mind, but hope to see many out there. A pickleball workshop will
follow and we encourage any who are curious about this popular new game to
come and learn how to play!
➢ The deadline to submit comments to the City of Bakersfield Bike and Pedestrian
Safety Plan study online interactive survey map has been extended to July 31st. We
encourage all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to have your voice

included in this report. This survey will help staff get resident feedback in addition to
data collected over the year. The map can be accessed online here:

• In the past week, Police training staff administered two sessions of the POST
(Peace Officers Standards and Training) Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test
Battery (PELLET B) exam. This written exam is an important first step in the
police officer trainee recruitment process and is standard across the state of
California. The scores are calculated at the state level and returned back to
the City at a later date. Qualifying scores are needed for each subsequent
stage of the process, which includes an agility test, oral interview exam, and
background check. Those who reach the final stage are then eligible to
enter the Police training academy, for which the City is busily preparing the
academy building. This rigorous process ensures that we are screening for the
highest quality candidates to protect and serve. Good luck to all applicants!
• Last weekend, officers from the

chaperoned boys who
participated in the Police
Activities League Boys Social
program on a trip to Santa
Monica. The officers who
chaperoned were the
facilitators of this program that is
held during the school year. The
Santa Monica trip is a valuable
incentive for students to remain
in good academic standing and persevere in the PAL social program
throughout the year.

provided a tour of the Bakersfield
Police Department and also
received the Anti-Bullying
presentation by Community
Relations staff. See the photo to

➢ The Recreation and Parks Department has plenty of family-friendly activities
available this summer, including:
o Family Fun Nights at McMurtrey Aquatic Center tonight, June 28th, July 26th,
and August 23rd from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The cost is $4 per person or $13 for a
group of four. Flyer attached.
o The Summer Movies in the Park. The next movie will be tonight, featuring “The
Lego Movie 2” at Greystone park. Flyer attached.
o Beale Band Concerts, the last of which will take place this Sunday at 7:00
p.m. Flyer attached.
➢ Bakersfield is featured in the Visit
California (California Travel and Tourism
Commission)’s “Central Valley Foodie Road
Trip”. In partnership with Visit Bakersfield,
the road trip highlights neat Bakersfield
stops, with the following opening
description:
“Bakersfield is full of surprises. Once known
for oil and agriculture, this Central Valley
town is morphing into an arts, culture, and
sports hub, while still offering a glimpse of
the past.

Traffic Advisories
➢ UPDATE: Weekend intersection closure at 23rd Street and Chester Avenue
rescheduled
The drainage work planned for this weekend at the 23rd Street and Chester Avenue
intersection has been rescheduled to July 12-15. The around-the-clock weekend closure
is now expected to be set in place on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. and to re-open by 5 a.m.
on July 15.
During the closure, northbound and southbound motorists should use either H Street or L
Street to cross the 23rd Street/24th Street corridor while work is underway.
Eastbound motorists can detour around the closure by turning south on H Street to 21st
Street and continuing east to L Street to return to eastbound 23rd Street and State Route
178. Eye Street and K Street are expected to remain open through the weekend.
This work is not expected to impact westbound traffic on 24th Street. No work is
scheduled along the corridor on July 4 or 5, due to the holiday.
➢ Partial Closure of H Street between Truxtun Avenue and 4th Street
Beginning Thursday morning, June 20th, at 7:00 a.m. until Monday, July 15th, at 7:00 p.m.,
northbound and southbound traffic on H Street between California Avenue and Truxtun
Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
On Saturday morning, June 29th, at 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. one lane of H Street will be
closed at California Avenue for both northbound and southbound traffic. California
Avenue will be reduced to two lanes in each direction.
Beginning Wednesday morning, July 3rd, at 7:00 a.m. until July 12th, at 7:00 p.m., H Street
between 4th Street and California Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each
direction.
On Saturday morning, July 13th, at 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., California Avenue at H Street
will be reduced to one lane for eastbound and westbound traffic. Northbound and
southbound traffic on H Street will be detoured onto westbound and eastbound
California Avenue.
These closures are needed for the rehabilitation of H Street between Truxtun Avenue
and California Avenue. Motorists will merge into one lane or two lanes in each direction
while the lanes are reduced.

2019 July 4th Community Celebration
Live Music, Food, and Fireworks Show
Bakersfield, CA – An annual Bakersfield tradition, the July 4th Community Celebration returns
to the Park at River Walk, featuring a free fireworks show and live entertainment at the
Spectrum Amphitheatre. The event, produced by the City of Bakersfield and AEG, is made
possible by the contributions of generous sponsors, including Pacific Gas & Electric, Adventist
Health, Rabobank N.A., Cal Water, Spectrum, and the Robert and Kari Grimm Family
Foundation. The event will get started at 6:00 PM, with music by Truxtun Mile and Wilfredo
Cruz Jr. starting at 7:00 PM, and the fireworks scheduled for 9:15 PM. Food and beverages
will be available for sale by El Churro Loco, Pita Paradise, Fuego’s and Carney Kettle Corn.
The event will be live streamed by KERO 23 on turnto23.com, and music for the firework
portion of the event will be simulcast by KUZZ.
Parking for this event is extremely limited and will not be allowed in the commercial district
along Stockdale Highway or the vacant lot at the corner of Stockdale and Buena Vista.
Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, carpool, rideshare with Uber, or use public
transportation to attend the event. Secure bike valet parking will be provided by Bike
Bakersfield starting at 6:00 PM.

Fireworks Safety Tips
Fireworks can only be purchased within the City limits from 12:00 pm July 1 through 12:01 am July
5. Remember, most accidents involve children ages 5 to 14, so close supervision is a must. Always
read directions and use common sense:
Always have an adult present.
Always ignite outdoors away from people, structures, vehicles, dry grass or other combustibles.
Never alter or disassemble fireworks.
Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks or light ones that have loose fuses or leaking powder.
Never allow small children to ignite or handle fireworks, and keep animals away from fireworks.
Never throw fireworks at another person or animal.
Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
Always keep a water source nearby.
To be legal in California, all fireworks must have the State of
California Fire Marshal's seal and the slogan, "Safe and Sane."
All others, including "Safe and Sane” that have been modified in
any manner, are illegal and will be confiscated with citations
issued.
REMINDER: all Piccolo Pete or other whistling-type
fireworks, and Ground Bloom-type fireworks are illegal
for sale or use in the City of Bakersfield.

Sealing streets in the area south of Stockdale Hwy between Allen and Old River
Miscellaneous Streets Division projects:
Video inspection of City owned sewer and storm lines to evaluate condition of pipes
Repairing damaged sewer line found during video inspection
Miscellaneous concrete repairs throughout the City
Constructing a sump on 1st Street and V Street
Concrete at various GET Bus Stop throughout the City of Bakersfield
Concrete work in the Oleander HUD area
NOTE: If raining, there will be no street sweeping service and all street cleaning personnel will be
assigned to cleaning plugged drains and part circle culverts. This also applies when a large
number of street sweepers are in Fleet for repairs. Areas that have been missed during this time
will be swept at the end of the month only when possible.
