HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/27/2019AT OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER September 27, 2019 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  The City recognized 45 employees (not all pictured below) with the Extra Mile Award at Wednesday evening’s City Council meeting. The General Services Team and four Technology Services employees were nominated for the award for their work completing the conversion and remodel of the El Torito Restaurant on California Avenue into the Bakersfield Police Department’s new Training Facility (funded by Measure N) in just three and a half months. The team started work in mid-April and finished on the August 1st deadline to have new cadets in training four days later. The work saved the City hundreds of thousands of dollars.  City Council this week approved several steps in addressing the homelessness concerns in Bakersfield, all funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services tax measure. A private cleaning service was contracted to clean up human feces in the Downtown and Old Town Kern areas. The service will operate four hours a day, five days a week. Council also approved the contracting of private security patrols around Bakersfield, specifically focusing on areas hit hardest by property crimes and quality of life issues. A $155,000 contribution to the Bakersfield-Kern Regional Homeless Collaborative was also approved by the council. General Information September 27, 2019 Page 2 The September issue of the monthly Public Safety & Vital Services Newsletter was released this week. The latest edition provides updates on the Bakersfield Fire Department’s enhanced response capabilities thanks to a pair of new Type 3 Engines (pictured below), as well as how the new Economic & Community Development Division of Development Services will help attract new businesses and high-quality jobs to Bakersfield. You can read the newsletter here. Traffic Advisories Nighttime Closures for Freeway Connector Ramp Nighttime closures are scheduled for the northbound State Route 99 to eastbound State Route 58 connector ramp from Monday, September 30, 2019 through Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
