B-CARES Update
Millions of dollars in B-CARES grants are still available to local small businesses. So far,
the City has approved 127 grants for $655,000, but that means there is still more than
$2.3 million available out of the City’s original allocation of $3 million for the program.
Anyone interested in applying for this grant funding – which does not need to be
repaid at any point – can do so here.

The City and its Recreation & Parks Department this week celebrated the opening of
Bakersfield’s newest park, Bridle Creek Park in the southwest. Mayor Karen Goh was joined by
City Manager Christian Clegg (below left), Recreation & Parks Director Dianne Hoover,

City Councilmember Jacquie Sullivan (Ward 6) and representatives from developer S&S Homes for an official ribbon cutting ceremony and commemoration (page 1).
The 9.4-acre park is the 61st operated by the Recreation & Parks Department and features two half basketball courts, two playground areas with ADA-compliant
surfacing (below left), two covered picnic-areas with BBQ grills, and a two-acre dog park (right).
Wednesday, October 28 was National First Responders Day, a day to recognize the heroic men and
women who make it their business to
take immediate action when
disaster strikes. Designated by
Congress in 2017, the day honors all
first responders, including firefighters
(right), police officers, dispatchers,
and Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMTs).

The local travel sector is starting to show signs of recovery in the face of
the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit
Bakersfield Manager David Lyman analyzed Bakersfield’s recent tourism numbers and
found that the City is actually out-performing the state and nation when it comes to
area hotel occupancy. While we’re still not quite there yet, the City is slowly creeping back to 2019 levels. The Transient Occupancy Tax brings in significant revenue for the
City, so improved occupancy rates are important for our coffers. Read more of David’s analysis in the Kern Business Journal.

The Catholic Daughters of America from St. Malachy Catholic
Church in Tehachapi made a generous donation to the newly opened Brundage Lane Navigation Center this week! The group dropped off toiletries and other
supplies for clients of the BLNC to use. Maria Russell, Toni Hines and Mary
Herbert (top left picture, from left to
right) dropped off the large collection of
supplies (below left) for BLNC clients to
City Hall North on Thursday, October 29
and staff from the BLNC later came and
picked up the items (below right). These
donations, which are greatly
appreciated, were gathered by Russell,
Hines, Herbert, Sam Brown, Julie
Buchanan and Diane Baptiste. Thank
you all for your generosity!
Traffic Advisories
Closure on Ford Avenue
Ford Avenue will be closed between North Stine Road and Candy Street beginning on Tuesday, November 3, through Friday, November 6, during daytime hours. The closure is
needed to remove falsework from a newly constructed bridge.
Residents can detour around the work zone by using Joseph Drive or McDonald Way to
enter or exit the neighborhood.

NOTE: If raining, there will be no street sweeping service and all street cleaning personnel will
be assigned to cleaning plugged drains and part circle culverts. This also applies when a
