HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/05/2021CC / JK OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER March 5, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  Thanks to the Clean City Initiative, Solid Waste is hosting more pop-up bulky item drive-thru drop-off events this weekend. Large items that don’t fit in residential tan or blue bins can be brought to either Kaiser Permanente Sports Village (the parking lot at the northwest corner of McKee and Ashe Roads) or 4200 Panorama Drive (near the corner of Panorama and Columbus Street) on Saturday, March 6, from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents should be prepared to unload their items themselves. These events have been well-received by the public, with nearly 900 vehicles dropping off more than 55 tons worth of items on February 13. To-date, these events have collected more than 115 tons of trash and recycling. As part of the Clean City Initiative, these events are funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure.  The Bakersfield Fire Department wished a fond farewell to an integral part of the department this week as Howard Wines III retired after more than two and a half decades of service to the City. Howard (right) was hired as a Hazardous Materials Technician with the department in February of 1994 after serving more than six years with the Kern County Fire Department. He most recently served as the Director of Fire Prevention with BFD, prioritizing and implementing the department’s HAZMAT facilities inspections, leading to the City earning the highest Certified Unified Program Agency inspection General Information March 5, 2021 Page 2 rate in California. As a result, Howard was nominated for and received an Excellence in Action Award from the City in November in recognition of his performance. Howard, we thank you for your service in the department, and to the residents of Bakersfield and wish you the best in retirement!  The March low-cost vaccine and licensing clinic hosted by the City’s Animal Care Center is set for Saturday, March 6 at Beale Park (500 Oleander Drive) from 9 a.m. to noon. This program has proved to be quite successful, with 338 vaccines given and nearly 200 licenses issued during February’s clinic at Jefferson Park (below).  The COVID-19 pandemic has meant getting creative when it comes to celebrity reading events. This week, several crew members from Bakersfield Fire Station 15 on Buena Vista Road recorded themselves reading for students (below) at Patriots Elementary School, then shared the videos with teachers at the school. General Information March 5, 2021 Page 3    Recreation & Parks staff has been working hard to clean up the median near the intersection of Hosking Avenue and Leprechan Way after Councilmember Chris Parlier (Ward 7) asked that the area be addressed. Staff removed unsightly vegetation that didn’t match the surrounding landscape, cleaned the area, and then planted 232 shrubs and four trees (right). They also made irrigation improvements to the median as well. Reports  Recreation & Parks Department Rapid Response Team Report, March 1, 2021.  WARN notice from Tailored Brands.
