HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/19/2021CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER March 19, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  The Clean City Initiative’s pop-up bulky item drive-thru drop-off events return this weekend! The events will be hosted by the Solid Waste Division at the parking lots at Aera Park (100 Jewetta Drive) and at 2000 S. Union Avenue, near the Bakersfield Municipal Airport. Large trash or recycling items that don’t fit in residential tan or blue bins can be brought to either location from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 20. A list of acceptable and unacceptable items is included (in English and Spanish). Residents should be prepared to unload their items themselves. These events have proved popular among residents since they launched in January, with almost 250,000 pounds (125 tons) of items collected so far. As part of the Clean City Initiative, these events would not be possible without funding from the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure. In addition to promoting this weekend’s events through traditional local media outlets, it was posted on the City’s social media accounts, where we’ve seen a consistent and positive reception.  This week the City launched a new program to help local small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, offering loans of $5,000 to $50,000, which may be eligible to convert to forgivable loans in 12 months. The City has allocated $1.9 million to its new ReSTART Loan-to-Grant Program, which officially began accepting online applications on Monday, March 15. The program will be available until Nov. 31, 2021, or until all the funds are awarded. Businesses with 25 or fewer full-time employees – meeting other requirements as well – are eligible. General Information March 19, 2021 Page 2  A new down payment assistance program is now available to the public thanks to a partnership between the City of Bakersfield and non-profit organization Ventura County Community Development Corporation. The City’s Hope to Home program makes loans of up to $23,000 available to qualified applicants for home purchases in Bakersfield. More information about the program, as well as webinars and how to apply online, are all available on VCCDC’s website: https://vccdc.org/.  The Recreation & Parks Department will host a FREE Movie in the Park night for families on Friday, March 26 at Kaiser Permanente Sports Village. The movie that night will be Disney’s “The Jungle Book” (2016), which will start at dusk. Attendees are asked to bring their own picnic gear – lawn chairs and blankets are allowed – and to maintain at least six feet from people not from their own household.  In need of a fresh background for your next online meeting? Visit Bakersfield has you covered, releasing six new “Zoom” backgrounds featuring some stunning visuals from around the City. Maybe show off the Historic Fox Theater marquee, or the retro cool of the Neon Courtyard (right)! You can download the six new ones, or any of the original 10 right here on the Visit Bakersfield blog.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is hosting a free snack program in partnership with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. This program is federally funded, allowing all children from 2- to 18-years-old to receive a nutritious meal free of charge, Monday through Friday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Due to the pandemic, an afternoon snack and dinner snack will be combined in one bag per child. Traffic Advisories  RESCHEDULED: Nighttime Closure on California Avenue California Avenue will be closed in both directions between Easton Drive and Marella Way from March 24 and March 26. The closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. This closure is needed to lower the bridge into its final position, which will carry eastbound traffic on the Centennial Corridor freeway. Traffic will be routed using Oak Street to Truxtun Avenue to Mohawk Street if traveling west and Mohawk Street to Truxtun Avenue to Oak Street if traveling east. General Information March 19, 2021 Page 3 Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to unforeseen circumstances.
