The free fireworks show – sponsored by Grimmway Farms – will be held at The Park at River Walk at 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 4. This year’s celebration will be a little different from those in the past as there will be no concert held before. However, it will be wonderful for the community to be able to come together and honor this great nation. The public is invited to come out and watch the fireworks, watch from home live on 23ABC’s website, TurnTo23.com or by downloading their app for Roku, Apple TV or Fire TV.  The Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG) is developing comprehensive Local Road Safety Plans (LRSPs) to improve safety for all modes of transportation in the City of Bakersfield, and the organization will hold a community outreach meeting to gather additional feedback. The meeting is planned for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29. Public comments about local safety concerns are being accepted by Kern COG currently. The plans focus on traffic calming measures such as bike lanes, speed bumps, traffic circles, crosswalks and more. Kern COG has a dashboard of safety information on its website where the public can leave feedback. Once completed, these plans will help agencies compete for future safety improvement funds managed by the state.  The new Official Bakersfield Insiders’ Guide from Visit Bakersfield is now available! The guide highlights many of the City’s uniquely Bakersfield experiences, from our historic and vibrant music scene, to the new Bakersfield Brewery Trail, to the many outdoor recreation opportunities. The new guide is free and can be downloaded online, or you can pick one up at the Bakersfield Visitors Center at 515 Truxtun Avenue.  The Recreation & Parks Department’s Rapid Response Team cleaned up 22,000 pounds of trash at three different encampments. That’s 11 tons of trash in just one General Information June 16, 2021 Page 2 week! Check out more of what the RRT accomplished during that time in its weekly report.  The park access improvements project at Patriots Park is nearly completed! Crews have finished paving all three parking lots there (below), part of a process that will renovate parking lots at five City-maintained parks and service roads with American Disability Act improvements. One of the lots has been striped, and the other two will be striped next week. The entire project, which is funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure, is expected to be completed by early July. Other parks included in the project are Grissom Park, Wilson Park, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, and Siemon Park.  Phase I of a $1.1 million project to retrofit decorative street lights with new energy-efficient light- emitting diodes (LED) is now virtually complete, with more than 99% of the poles upgraded. So far contractor Tanko Lighting has retrofitted 919 out of 926 decorative poles with LED kits in northwest Bakersfield, southwest Bakersfield, as well as in Downtown Bakersfield (right) and Old Town Kern. This project is funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure and when completed, will have replaced around 3,000 street light kits, following work in 2018 in partnership with PG&E to upgrade nearly 13,000 street lights in the City. These new kits require less maintenance than traditional street lights and are more energy efficient, saving the City on energy costs. They also improve lighting on walking areas, as well as on the streets themselves, creating a safer environment for everyone in the City’s right-of-way. Kern River (Encampment Clean-up) • 6/6/2021- The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with several encampment clean- ups located in the riverbed area by Golden State Hwy. Trash was taken to Bena Landfill. • 6/7/2021- The RRT continued assisting Code Enforcement with the encampment clean-ups at the riverbed. A total of 8760 lbs. of trash was removed and taken to Bena landfill for disposal. • 6/8/2021- The RRT continued to assist Code Enforcement with the encampment clean-ups at the riverbed. A total of 2260 lbs. of trash was removed and taken to Bena landfill for disposal. 2. Coffee Road (Encampment Clean-up) • The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with a homeless encampment clean-up north of Rosedale Hwy. • 2200 lbs. of trash was removed and taken to Bena landfill for disposal. 3. Uplands of the Kern River (Encampment Clean-up) • The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with several encampment clean-ups located in the Uplands Kiosk areas just west of Chester Ave. • 8800 lbs. of trash was removed and taken to Bena landfill. Miscellaneous 1. Amtrak Station (New Greyhound Bus Terminal) • 6/11/2021-The RRT continued with the concrete demo project at the Amtrak station. • 6/12/2021- The RRT continued with the concrete demo project and took a load of contaminated concrete to Bena landfill. 2. San Miguel Grove (Parking Lot Security Gate Repair) • The RRT repaired the damaged parking lot entrance security gate, due to vandalism. An existing bollard post (south of entrance) that was vandalized and stolen was also replaced. 3. Lowell Park (Restroom Door Lock Repair) • 6/10/2021-6/11/2021-The RRT repaired two damaged security lock hasps on both restroom doors, due to vandalism and homeless encampments that were set up inside the restrooms. 4. Mechanics Bank Arena (Fountain Drain Cover Repair) • The RRT repaired and replaced security bolts on two of the drain covers inside the fountain. Ongoing Projects 1. Greystone Park (Trash Enclosure Modification) • The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a new cover on the existing trash enclosure. 2. McMurtrey Aquatics Center (Wrought Iron Fence Modification) • The RRT will schedule wrought iron fence modification on west side concession area to prevent illegal entry. 3. Beale Park (New Trash Enclosure) • The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a security cover for the new trash enclosure. 4. Regular construction updates are also available on the TRIP website at BakersfieldFreeways.us MILESTONES  Began pouring the deck for the Commerce Drive bridge  Completed construction of the bridge over the eastbound State Route 58 Ming Ave off-ramp  Finished the falsework for the Stockdale Bridge  Began construction on the abutments at the Marella Bridge. PROJECT STATUS 24th Street Improvement Project Contractor: Griffith Company Construction completed The project added a lane in each direction between Oak Street and M Street, improved the 24th Street/Oak Street intersection, and landscaped the corridor in the residential section of 24th Street. The project also installed a drainage system to address frequent flooding along this downtown corridor. * Due to the completion of this project, there will be no further updates on the status report. Centennial Corridor Phase 1 - Kern River Bridge Improvements Contractor: Security Paving Company This phase constructed bridges across Truxtun Avenue and the Kern River for the future westbound Centennial Corridor (State Route 58) exit to Mohawk Street and widened the existing eastbound bridges at the Kern River and Truxtun Avenue to accommodate the future freeway lanes. This phase of the Centennial Corridor has been completed. June 2021 TRIP Status Report TRIP Status Report June 2021 Page 2 Phase 2 – Belle Terrace Operational Improvements Contractor: Granite Construction The Belle Terrace Project included improvements on State Route 99 and Belle Terrace. The improvements on State Route 99 included the addition of a northbound auxiliary lane from the Ming Avenue on-ramp to the northbound State Route 99/eastbound State Route 58 connector over Wible Road. The local road improvements included realigning Wible Road and Alamo Street as well as raising Belle Terrace to match the reconstruction of the Belle Terrace overcrossing. This phase of the Centennial Corridor has been completed. Phase 3 – Bakersfield Freeway Connector Contractor: Security Paving Company 64% complete; anticipated completion: Early 2022 This phase of Centennial Corridor reconstructs the westbound-to-southbound loop ramp at the State Route 58/State Route 99 interchange. The project also constructs a new barrier-separated off-ramp to Ming Avenue from southbound State Route 99. • Continue the construction of Retaining Wall #69. This wall separates the State Route 58 to southbound State Route 99 ramp and the future Ming Avenue off-ramp. • Started the placement of concrete paving on the Ming Ave off ramp from eastbound State Route 58. • Drainage work continues at various locations within the project site. • Construction of the Stage 2 westbound State Route 58 to southbound State Route 99 tunnel continues. Phase 4 – Mainline Contractor: Security Paving Company 47% complete; anticipated completion: Early 2023 This phase constructs the freeway and multiple bridge structures between State Route 99 and the Westside Parkway. • Pour abutment for northbound State Route 99 to westbound State Route 58 fly over connector. • Construct abutments and bent for S. Real Road bridge. • Continue rough grading of Mainline between Ford and California. • Various walls and drainage systems remain under construction throughout the project area. TRIP Status Report June 2021 Page 3 State Route 43/Stockdale Highway Roundabout Contractor: Griffith Company Construction completed This project replaced an existing 4-way stop with a roundabout at the State Route 43 (Enos Lane) and Stockdale Highway intersection. * Due to the completion of this project, there will be no further updates on the status report. Upcoming Projects Hageman Bike Path Contractor: TBD This project consists of a new 0.40 mile long two directional 10 feet wide Class I bike path with 2’ wide shoulders on each side. The bike path will begin at the east side of Standard Street cul-de-sac and run east along the south side of the State Route 99 and State Route 204 connector up until the east side of the State Route 99. The bike path continues east along the State Route 204 off-ramp to Buck Owens Blvd and ends at Buck Owens Blvd. The bike path will have an all-weather paved surface allowing for two-way bicycle and pedestrian movement. Rosedale Highway Widening Project Contractor: TBD This project widens Rosedale Highway from Calloway Drive to Verdugo Lane from 2 lanes to 3 lanes in each direction. The project involves reconstructing the existing median to accommodate the additional lane in each direction. It will also include construction of sidewalks in the east-bound and west-bound directions and installation of curb and gutter where it does not exist in the westbound direction. The project will include right turn pockets at Verdugo Lane and Calloway Drive. The project length is 0.50 miles long.
