HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/25/2021CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER June 25, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  A short section of Eye Street between 19th and 20th Streets Downtown has been reopened to vehicle traffic and parking! The City closed the area (right) to vehicles back in September to help area businesses operate while also complying with the state’s re-opening guidelines in place at the time. With those lifted recently, the City removed the barricades and nearby restaurants removed their tents and other structures from the street and sidewalk. The City is proud to have worked with our community business partners to help them as we could during the pandemic, including creating the COVID-19 Special Event Permits to allow many of them to operate outdoors during indoor service restrictions and by awarding almost $6 million to local businesses through our innovative B-CARES Small Business Assistance Grants.  Visit Bakersfield's new Official Bakersfield Insiders' Guide was released just last week and already it has been nominated for a national award. Madden Media, the firm that designed and published the Insiders’ Guide, nominated the guide for a 2021 Destiny Award, to be presented through the U.S. Travel Association at its annual ESTO (Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations) conference. Madden feels the guide General Information June 25, 2021 Page 2 is award-worthy – and we agree! This is the first Visit Bakersfield product to have been nominated for a national award. Winners will be announced in mid-August. The new Insiders' Guide is available free at the Visitor Center, 515 Truxtun Avenue, and soon will be in information racks at most Bakersfield hotels, museums and the Amtrak station. You can order your copy or view the Insiders' Guide online here: https://www.visitbakersfield.com/visitors/visitors-guide/  Another week, another park access improvement project completed! The contractor has completed the installation of new asphalt at Grissom Park (below) for the City’s Recreation & Parks Department. This follows the completion of American Disability Act improvements recently done at Patriots Park. Wilson Park, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and Siemon Park are also included in this project, which is funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure. The parking lots and impacted service roads for each project are closed during the work until they are completed. The entire project is expected to be completed by early July. The City appreciates the public’s understanding while these improvements are completed.  Be one of the first to pose in front of Bakersfield’s newest selfie spot, courtesy of Visit Bakersfield. The classic “Greetings from Bakersfield” postcard is ready for its close-up at the Bakersfield Visitor Center at 515 Truxtun Avenue (right). One card is on the north side of the building, visible to those driving past on Truxtun Avenue. The other is on the south side, just steps away from the Bakersfield Amtrak Station. Take your selfie at either spot, or both, and when you post them on social media, be sure to use #VisitBakersfield! The postcard selfie spots were produced by Elite Signs and Promotions of Bakersfield. Friends and family were on-hand to celebrate and pin badges on the new officers. This is the fourth academy class funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure as the City continues its efforts to add 100 new officers to the department. A new academy class will be starting in July. Congratulations to this graduating class and welcome to the department!  I am also proud and happy to report that on June 10, City Clerk Julie Drimakis received her Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) designation after completing the International Institute of Municipals Clerks’ (IIMC)e program. The IIMC is a professional, non-profit association that offers programs for the development of members. The MMC program is designed to raise the standards of municipal clerks around the world. The MMC certification is given after the completion of an extensive and rigorous General Information June 25, 2021 Page 4 educational component, as well as a professional contribution component. The program prepares participants to perform complex municipal duties. Julie joins 172 other Clerks in California with the MMC distinction. Please join me in congratulating her on this great professional accomplishment!  As a reminder, due to the summer heat, there will be no low-cost pet vaccination clinics held in July and August. The Bakersfield Animal Care Center will host two clinics in September instead. Traffic Advisories  Nighttime closure planned on California Avenue California Avenue will be closed in both directions between Easton Drive and Marella Way June 29 and June 30. The closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. The closure is needed to remove k-rail. Traffic will be routed using Oak Street to Truxtun Avenue to Mohawk Street if traveling west and Mohawk Street to Truxtun Avenue to Oak Street if traveling east. Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the traveling public.
