JoinBPD.us will serve not only as the starting point for prospective trainees, but also as an ongoing resource for future police officers and the public. This is the latest tool in the City’s effort to increase recruitment for the department, including the addition of bonuses of up to $4,500 for eligible officers. ➢ Are you ready for your closeup? Visit Bakersfield has created a new campaign to help residents and visitors find unique locations to snap photos and create memories: The Bakersfield Selfie Trail! Not only can you get some great pics around the City, but if you check-in at any 12 of the more than 20 different Selfie Trail locations, you will qualify for either a 30-ounce Yeti tumbler in either black or seafoam, or a T-shirt and hat combo. Anyone interested in trekking the Selfie Trail should head to visitbakersfield.com to sign up, then make sure to tag your photos on social media with #VisitBakersfield. We’ve already had at least four people complete the 12 pics and collect their prizes this week and we’ve had more than 60 total check-ins so far! General Information Oct. 8, 2021 Page 2 ➢There will be two pop-up large item drop-off events this weekend! The Solid Waste Division will host drop-off locations at Kaiser Permanente Sports Village (9001 Ashe Road) and 4200 Panorama Drive on Saturday, October 9 from 8 a.m. to noon. The last events, held on September 11, collected more than 22,400 pounds of trash items and since January this year, more than 434,000 pounds of trash has been collected at these events. ➢The Bakersfield Police Department held its National Night Out event at Patriots Park Tuesday evening, meeting with community members to help build partnerships in the community, as well as neighborhood camaraderie (right top and middle). Several resource providers and representatives from City departments and divisions were also on-hand to share information about resources and services that are available to the community. The free event also featured games, music and even the BPD Drone Team. ➢The Bakersfield Police Department this week also held four pop-up Coffee with a Cop events on Wednesday, October 6. The events were held for about 90 minutes in four different locations throughout the City to give as many residents as possible a chance to meet some of our great officers! The events were held at the BPD Headquarters on Truxtun Avenue (right bottom), at the Walmart on Gosford Road, the Lowes at Panama and Colony and at the Westside BPD Substation. Thanks to everyone who came out and thank you to Starbucks for donating coffee at each location! ➢The basketball court at Jastro Park is getting a make- over. Thanks to an $86,000 allocation from the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N, the entire existing court surface and equipment will be removed and replaced with new concrete, textured colored surfacing, striping, as well as new posts, backboards and hoops. This rehabilitation project started on Thursday, October 7, and is expected to be completed by mid-December. In the meantime, the court will be unavailable to the public. The City appreciates the public’s understanding and patience as we complete these improvements. ➢The Recreation & Parks Department will hold two Halloween events this year, so be sure to get them on your calendar now! They will both be held on Friday, October 29 with the Halloweentown at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center (1000 S. General Information Oct. 8, 2021 Page 3 Owens Street) first from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with a Trick-or Treat safe zone. The second event will be Trunk-or-Treat at the Silver Creek Community Center (7011 Harris Road) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Following that event, the animated movie “The Addams Family” will be played as a free movie in the park! ➢ More than 220 vaccines were given to 110 pets at this past weekend’s monthly low- cost pet vaccination clinic. The clinic was held on Saturday, October 2, at Central Park at Mill Creek. In addition to the 222 total vaccinations, microchips were also provided for 25 dogs. The microchips are free to City residents who also get their pet licensed at the same time. The next clinic is set for Saturday, November 6 at Kroll Park (7500 Kroll Way). ➢ The City Clerk’s Office is accepting applications to fill several vacancies on the Bakersfield Youth Commission: • Ward 1: regular and alternate appointments • Ward 6: regular and alternate appointments • Ward 7: regular and alternate appointments Applicants must be City residents, current high school students at the time of appointment, and maintain as close to a 3.0 grade point average as possible. Anyone interested in applying for these openings can do so at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall North (1600 Truxtun Avenue) or by downloading an application from the City’s website here. The website includes information about the department, including Police Chief Greg Terry and other department leadership. “I am excited about the addition of this new recruiting tool so the Bakersfield Police Department can continue to grow to meet the needs of our growing community,” Chief Terry said. “This dedicated recruiting website will help prepare potential candidates before they arrive at the academy, as well as help us attract smart, enthusiastic and innovative candidates who are willing to serve the public and who are interested in providing the community policing that Bakersfield residents want and expect from this department.” Prospective candidates can use JoinBPD.us to find open positions within the department, submit an application, learn about what to expect from the application process, the interview phase, and the academy itself. Information about employment benefits that full officers enjoy, including CalPERS retirement and health insurance coverage options, is also included on this new website. The City is currently accepting applications for the Bakersfield Police Department’s next academy class, set to start in December, 2021. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through JoinBPD.us. The City of Bakersfield has also created new recruiting and retention incentives for qualifying officers who graduate from the academy then successfully complete a full year of service with the department. San Miguel Grove (Access Barrier) • The RRT relocated large landscaping boulders adjacent to the parking lot entry gate to prevent illegal vehicle access after park closed hours. 2. Corporation Yard (RRT Storage) • The RRT cleaned and modified the storage area in preparation for new section fence installation. 3. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Concession Window Board-Up) • The RRT boarded up a broken window at the old concession building due to vandalism. 4. Planz Park (Sign Installation) • The RRT removed and replaced a section of concrete mow curb located at the park sign planter to install a new Adopt-A-Park sign. 5. Weill Park (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with trash removal from homeless encampments set up at various locations throughout the park. • 3 sites were addressed. • Trash load was taken to Bena Landfill (Total weight 960 lbs.). Miscellaneous 1. Area 1 – Northwest (Irrigation Work Requests) • The RRT assisted Area 1 with completing irrigation work requests as needed due to personnel vacancies. 2. Siemon Park (Access Road Rehabilitation) • The RRT delivered dirt loads to backfill areas that will be converted from asphalt to turf as part of the access improvement rehabilitation project. 3. Stone Creek Park (Concrete Removal) • The RRT removed damaged concrete around the perimeter of the playground as part of the playground rehabilitation project. Cement Contractor will re-install the new concrete. Ongoing Projects 1. Greystone Park (Trash Enclosure Modification) • The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a new cover on the existing trash enclosure. 2. McMurtrey Aquatics Center (Wrought Iron Fence Modification) • The RRT will schedule wrought iron fence modification on west side concession area to prevent illegal entry. 3. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Perimeter Fence Windscreen Replacement) • The RRT will be completing replacement of the ball diamond fence windscreens at Field 4 once the additional screens arrive. 4.
