City offices will be closed Friday, December 24, in observance of the Christmas holiday. Residential trash services will NOT be impacted by the closure.
Notable Items

the more than 80 people
who lost their lives while
homeless in Kern County over
the last year.
These 86 individuals were
remembered in a service at
the first-ever Homeless Persons Memorial Vigil held
at the Historic Union
Cemetery. A wreath and
plaque from the ceremony
are now in the lobby of City Hall North (right, page 2).

Collaborative, County of Kern,
The Mission at Kern County, Flood
Ministries, Bakersfield Homeless
Center, Community Action
Partnership Kern, as well as the
Brundage Lane Navigation Center operator Mercy House to
find solutions to the homeless crisis in Bakersfield and Kern
County.
Visit Bakersfield is proud to announce its first Bakersfield Restaurant Week! Restaurant Weeks are celebrated in
many cities throughout the U.S. and we are excited to bring this successful promotion to Bakersfield. Space for this exciting event – which will provide restaurants with free
promotion and advertising – is limited to a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are an owner of a Bakersfield-based restaurant who is interested in free
promotion and advertising as part of Bakersfield’s inaugural Restaurant Week, please
reach out to info@visitbakersfield.com.
As the City looks to increase affordable housing opportunities, we’ve created a virtual
workshop through the Bakersfield Affordable Housing Strategy.
The goal of the workshop is to help the City better understand the needs of the
community, utilizing the feedback to help develop our affordable housing strategy.
Surveys will be available until Jan. 14.
Pickleball clinics return next month at Jastro Park! Learn how to play the fastest
growing sport in the U.S. at a four-day beginner’s clinic held on the first four Mondays
in January. Instruction includes overall strategy as well as shot types, serves and more!
The cost is $104 per person and online registration is now open.
The annual Holiday Grease Collection event is underway!
Through January 7, residents are
asked to bring any used cooking
oil and grease to one of two
drop-off locations for proper
disposal. Pouring the oil and/or
grease down home drains can
result in clogged pipes, leading to backups and costly repairs.

This free service provides a place to dispose of the oil and grease in a safe and
environmentally friendly way.
The City Council is recruiting nine individuals to serve on the Bakersfield Public Safety & Vital Services Measure Citizens Oversight Committee.
The Committee acts in an advisory capacity to review the expenditure of revenues
generated by the tax imposed by Measure N. It also provides independent
verification that the revenues collected pursuant to the measure are expended in
such a manner that is consistent with the priorities of the measure.
The term is for three years, which expires in February of 2025.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the City.
Applications are available at the City Clerk’s Office or on the City’s website.
The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022. Reports

Residential trash pickup services will not be impacted by Christmas or New Year’s holidays
During the weeks of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the City of Bakersfield
will conduct its residential trash and recycling collection services as normal. The
pickup schedules will not be changed due to the holidays, and all trucks will run
normally – Monday through Friday – without interruption.
Commercial trash and recycling services – which are normally completed on
Saturdays – will be delayed one day as a result of the Christmas and New Year’s
holidays. All commercial trash, recycling and green waste services will be completed
on the Sunday following each holiday: Dec. 26, 2021 and Jan. 2, 2022.
The Mt. Vernon Green Waste Facility will be closed both Christmas and New Year’s
days (Dec. 25, 2021 and Jan. 1, 2022), re-opening at 6 a.m. on Tuesday following
each holiday.
Christmas trees may be recycled at the Mt. Vernon Green Waste Facility 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday from Dec. 26, 2021 to Jan. 10, 2022 – with the exception of
New Year’s Day. The Green Waste Facility is located two miles south of Highway 58
on South Mt. Vernon Avenue.
Christmas trees can also be recycled 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week from Dec.
26, 2021 to Jan. 10, 2022 at either the Bakersfield College south parking lot at the
corner of Haley and University, or the Kern County Fairgrounds parking lot at the
corner of Belle Terrace and P Street.
Please remove all ornaments, bulbs, lights, and plastic or metal stands before
dropping them off.
Christmas trees may also be placed in your green waste container by cutting the
tree down to fit inside the container. The tree must allow the lid to close
completely. All ornaments, bulbs, lights, plastic and metal stands must be removed
from the tree. Those items may be placed in the tan trash container.

Projects Completed by RRT
1. Bike Path Tunnel @ Manor Street (Storm Clean-Up)
• The RRT closed and set out barricades at the bike-path tunnel off of Manor Street
due to flooding and debris caused by the storm. The RRT pumped out the water, cleared debris, and re-opened the bike path.
2. MLK Park (Electrical Cabinet Repair – Vandalism)
• The RRT modified and secured the existing electrical cabinet at the ball
diamond, due to vandalism after park operation hours. A new lock cover was fabricated, and a new lock was installed.
3. Saunders Park (Encampment Clean-Up)
• The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with trash removal from homeless
encampments set up along the northwest wall adjacent to the Hwy. 99 Freeway and sump area behind the Pavilion.
• 3 sites were addressed.
• Trash loads were taken to Bena Landfill for disposal (total weight 6,220 lbs.).
4. Saunders Park (Block Wall Access Gate Repair – Vandalism)
• The RRT re-secured the metal access gate on the east perimeter block wall due
to vandalism.
5. McMurtrey Aquatics Center (Trash Enclosure Repair – Vandalism)
• The RRT modified and secured the existing door locks on the parking lot trash enclosure, due to vandalism. A new lock cover was fabricated and installed.
Miscellaneous
1. Area 2 – Northeast (Work Requests)
• The RRT assisted Area 2 with completing work requests as needed due to
personnel limitations.
2. Lowell Shop (Security Lock Box Fabrication)
• The RRT fabricated new security lock boxes for future vandalism
repair/replacement needs.
3. Bike Path @ Chester Avenue (Tree Removal)
• The RRT removed a fallen tree that was obstructing the bike path, due to the recent storm, located east of Chester Ave.
4. Patriots Park (Restroom Security Gate Repair – Vandalism)
• The RRT repaired the men’s restroom security gate due to vandalism.
5. 1600 Truxtun Avenue (Office Furniture Relocation and Installation)
• The RRT removed and relocated existing office furniture at City Hall North 3rd
floor, as part of the new carpet installation project.
• The RRT also assembled and installed office furniture chairs at City Hall North 3rd
floor.
6. Mill House @ Mill Creek (Door Repair – Vandalism)
• The RRT secured the existing front door of the Mill House, due to Vandalism.
7. Kern River Parkway/Bike Path (Tumbleweed Removal & Trimming)
• The RRT removed tumbleweeds, trimmed, and removed leaves throughout the
bike path areas located along the Kern River Parkway.
Ongoing Projects
1. Greystone Park (Trash Enclosure Modification)
• The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a new cover on the existing
trash enclosure.
2. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Perimeter Fence Windscreen Replacement)
• The RRT will be completing replacement of the ball diamond fence windscreens at Field 4 once the additional screens arrive.
