An ordinance to amend Sections 1.7 and 19 of 0rd~.nance No. 179
of the City of Bakersfield, entitled "An ordinance regulating the con-
struction, erection, repair, alteration, removal, demolition, condemua~
tion and use of buildings in the City of Bakersfield."
Whereas the immediate preservation of the public safety requires·
that more rigi~ restrictions should be in force relating to the con-
struction, erection, repair and alteration of buildings in the City of
Bakersfield, now therefore.'
The Board of'Trustees of the Oity of Bakersfield, do ordain
as follows:~
Subdivision I c) of Sec. 17 of Ordinance No. 179 of the City of
Bakersfield is hereby amended to read as follows:
"Sec. 17 (c). Every frame building hereafter erected in the
City of Sakersfield, shall have solid foundations of brick, concrete or
stone; provided that small out-buildings notused for living purposes
may be placed on mud'sills.
Concrete foundations for one-story frame buildings shall not
be less than sixl6) inches thick at the top, and not less than ten (lC)
inches in height and not more than three feet in height above the sur-
face of the ground, and shall have at least two (2) inches batter to the
foot on at least one side.
Concrete fo~mdations for two-story frame buildings shall not
less than eight (8) inches thick at the top and not. less than twelve (12)
inches when more than three feet in height above the surface of the
ground and shall have not less than two (2) inches batter to the foot
on at least one side.
Brick foundations for one and two story frame buildings shall
be not less than eight (8) inches thick and not less than nine (9)
Brick foundations for three-story frame buildings shall be
not less than four (4) inches greater in thickness than for two story
buildings.
Where foundations are more than three feet high above
thw ground sur£ace, they shall be not less than four (4] inches
greater in thickness than that prescribed herein for foundations
three I~) feet in height or less.
V~nere frame buildings are moved from one location to
another in this city, the requirements for the new foundations
shall be the same as that required herein for new buildings.

Subdivis~io. :,(~)) of Sec. 19 of Ordinance N°. 179 .of the City of
Bakersfield, is hereby amended to read as follows:-
"Sec. 19 (a). Ail chimneys and flues hereafter
constructed, except as here'in otherwise provided, shall be of
brick or stone; their enclosing walls shall not be less than
four inches thick and except in dwellings, flats, apartment
houses and tenement houses, shall, if less than eight inches
thick be lined on the inside with well burnt clay or terra cotta
pipe not less than one inch thick. Said lining shall start from
the bottom of a flue or the throat of a fireplace, be continuous
to the top of the flue, and be built in first and bricked around
as carried up.
~lues where lining is not required by this ord~.nance shall
have the joints struck smooth on the inside, and, if less than
eight inches thick, shall be smoothly plastered for the entire
height on the outside.
No smoke flue shall be less than ?~ by ?~ inches in the
clear, and such sized flue shall have but two inlets; for three
inlets the flue shall m-xww not be less than 74 by 114 inches in
the clear; for four inlets not less than. 74 by 154 inches in the
clear, and for a larger number of inlets the size shall be
increased in the same proportion. ~lues larger t~zan 200 square
inches and less than 500 square inches area shall be surrounded
by walls not less than eight inches thick; . flues larger than 500
and less than 1000 square inches area shall be surrounded by walls
not less than twelve inches thick to a height of fifteen feet
above the inlet, and eight inches thick the remaining height;
flues larger than one thousand square inches shall be proportionately
increased in size and shall be lined with firebrick for at least
· t~ve.nty feet· above the inlet. ~
Bakery oven flues shall not be less than t~velve by
twelve inches in the clear and shall bo surrounded by brick work
not less than eight inches thick,.

shall be carried up at least ten feet above the highest".,', point of the
roof of the building of which they form a part, and ten feet abo~
the highest point of any roof within fifty feet of such chimuey~
Vfhere .a... smoke pipe is to 'enter a chimney or flue, a tile
thimble not less than one inch thick shall be placed as
construction progresses. Thimbles shall be surrounded by four
inches of brick work brought out flush with furring, extended to
the face of the plastering, and not be nearer than si.x inches to
any wood lath and plaster.
Ohimneys not part of a wall shall not be built upon any
floor or beam of wood, but shall be built f~om the ground up, and
shall not increase in sixe from the foundation. No chimney shall
be corbelled out more thau eighto inches from a wall and corbeling
shall consist of~ at least five courses of brick, but no corbelling

Flues in party walls shall not extend within four inches
of the center of the wall, and joint flues in party walls shall
be separated across the wall by an eig!~.~-inch..~t~..$., of brickwork
~or the entire lenl~th.
No joi. st or girder shall b'e supported on the walls of any
chimuey or. flue, and no woodwork shall be placed nearer than
two inches to the outside of or within six inches of the ~side
of any smoke., air o~ other flue. All wood joists shall be
trimmed away at least two inches from any smoke, air or other

Ohimneys built on outside of fr~e
light walls thereof, s~ll be w.elt anchored at intervals of
not less t~n ten feet. to the stud walls.
All chi~eys and flues shall, e~end at least four feet
above a flat roof and at least t~o feet and six inches above
the ridge of a peaked roof, and if rising above the roof to
a height of more t~ six times their least thic~ess, shall be
anchored within iron rod or pipe not less th~ one inch in di~eter,
with fixed washer at each side of chi~ey, ~d not more than four
feet :.from the top of said chi~ey, and each chi~ey projecting
more t~n six times its least thic~ess above roo~ shall have at
least three four-inch cross walls, or two eight-inch walls in its
greatest width, and all such chi~eys shall, be laid in cement
mortar as provided for ~der head "~ire ~mlls" from the top of the
first tier of joists below the roof joists.

m spark arrester. Spark attesters shall be placed upon all
chi~eys and st~cks whenever by the Department of Buildings or
~ire 0bier deemed necessary for the safety of propert3r.
Ohimneys and flues from boilers, restaurants and hotel
ranges, bakers' ovens and similar unusuall3r hot flues, shall:
have the. outside expose& to the height of the room in which
'connection therewith is made or plastered directly upon the bricks.
Ail chimneys and flues shall be properly cleaned and all
rubbish removed and same left smooth on the inside on completion
of building.
Brick chimneys or flues where constructed at the
outside of fra~'e buildings and' which pass through the roof· at
the cave line may be stopped at a point not less than six feet
· above the nearest line of the roof.
Secti'on 3 This ordinance shall be in effect immediately
after its passage and due publication as required by law.
