AN ORDINA~CE PROHIBITING THE GROWTH OF
WEEDS kND PROVIDING FOR T~ ERADICATION THE~-
OF' ~ING A VIOLATION A ~ISDD~0R ~D PRO-
VIDING A PEN~TY T~FOR.
BE IT ORDAINED BY T~ C0~CIL OF T~ CITY OF B~RSFIELD, as
follows'
SECTION 1. It shall be ~lawful for the o~er, lessee, ~ent or m~er
of ~y lot or parcel of 1~8 within the City of Bakersfield to have,
pe~it or allow ~y weeds which bear seeds of a wi~y or do~y nature,
or attain such a large growth as to become a fire menace when dry, or
a menace to the public health, or which are otherwise noxious, d~er-
ons or ~sightly, to grow or remain on said lot or parcel of l~d
within said City, or upon the streets, parking or sidewalk spaces
in front of or adjoining said lot or parcel of l~d.
SECTION 2. ~y violation of the foregoi~ Section shall be deemed a mis-
demeanor ~d upon ~conviction thereof shall be o~ishable by a fine
not exceedi~ Three H~dred Dollgrs ($300.00) or impriso~ent in the
Co~ty Jail for a period not exceedi~ ninety (90) days, or by both
s~ch fine ~d impriso~ent.
SECTION 3. Shonld ~y such person, o~er, lessee, ~ent or m~er, fail,
neglect or refuse to remove such weeds on or before the 15th day of
Nay, 1918, ~nd thereafter keep said weeds removed from said property,
it shall be lawful for the City of Bakersfield, its officers, ~ents
or serv~ts, to enter upon said property ~d post thereon in a con-
spicnons plaice, a notice snbst~tially in the following fo~:

is posted to remove therefrom, within ten (10) d~ys

from the date hereof, all weeds.
NOTICE IS HEreBY GIVEN that if the owner or person
having the mana~j~ement or control of this property does
not remove such weeds within the time herein stated, the
City of Bakersfield will proceed to remove the same under
the direction of the Superintendent of Streets and will
charge the cost of- the work, together with a penalty of
Fifty (50) percent thereof, to the owner, lessee, agent
or manager of said property. If same is not paid within
thirty (30) days from the date when such work is fully
completed, an additional Five (5) per cent penalty will
be ~dded, and a like penalty every month thereafter until
the same is fully paid. Said costs and penalties shall
be ~md become a lien on this property.

SECTION 4. Should the owner, lessee, agent or manag, er of said property
fail, neglect or refuse to remove said weeds within ten (10) days
from the date of the posting of said Notice on any such property,
then it shall be lawful for the City of Bakersfield, its officers,
agents or servants, under the direction of the Superintendent of
Streets, to enter on said property and to remove therefrom or destroy
thereon said weeds, and to charge the costs thereof to the said
owner, lessee, agent or mana~er, together with a Fi'fty (50) per cent
penalty, and should said costs and penalty be not fully paid and
satisfied on or before one month from the time said work is fully
completed, then an additional Five (5) per cent penalty shall be
added and a like penalty every month thereafter until the same is
fully paid, said costs and penalties shall become a lien on the prop-
erty on which the above Notice was posted, and from which the weeds
were removed by the City of Bakersfield;
A statement of said costs and penalties for the work on each

separate parcel of lsnd shs[[1 be made out by the S~perintendent of
Streets and kept on file in his office, and the said Superintendent
of Streets is hereby a~thorized and directed to accept payment of
the same.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Ordinance was passed by
the Council of the City of Bakersfield on the 14th day of January,
1918, by the following vote :
