REGULATING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SIDEWALKS T~ERE-
ON: PROVIDI~G FOR AN INSPECTOR FOR S~.E:PRO-
VIDING A PENALTY FOR VIOLATION HEREOF, AND
P~_~ALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES
IN CONFLICT HEREWITH.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF 'BAKERSFIELD, as
follows:
SECTION 1. In this Ordinance the phrase "curb-line" shall be used and con-
strued to mean a line in the street, avenue, lane or alley parallel with
the property-line between the "sidewalk space" and the roadway as here-
inafter defined.
The phrase "property-line" shall be used. and construed to mean
a line between a street, avenue, lane or alley and the blocks, squares
or lines abutting upon such street, avenue, lane or alley.
The phrase "sidewalk space" shall be used and construed to mean
the space between said property-line and curb-line.
The phrase "parking-space" shall be used and construed to mean
as much of the sidewalk space next to the curb-line as the Comucil of
said City of Bakersfield may in any .wise determine'.
The word "sidewalk" shall be used and construed to mean that
portion of the street which is set apart by dedication, ordinance or
otherwise and improved for the use of pedestrians, or such part of the
sidewalk space as the Council may specify.
The word "roadway" shall be used and construed to be so much of
the street, avenue, lane or alley as lies between the curb-lines thereof.
Reference is hereby made to "Plan of Typical Block of the City of
Bakersfield" approved and adopted by the Board of Trustees of the City
of Bakersfield on the 17th day of November, 1910, end on file in the
office of the C, ity Engineer, for further explanations of the foregoing
definitions.
SECTION 2. (1). On all streets or avenues 60 to 70 feet wide, except as
hereinafter provided, each curb-line shall be 12 feet from ~he~ ad-
j scent property-line.
(2). On all streets, avenues or lanes 70 to 85 feet wide, ex-
cept as hereinafter provided, each curb-line shall be 14 feet from the
adjacent property-line.
(3). On all streets or avenues over 85 feet wide, except as
hereinafter provided, each curb-line shall be 17 feet from the adjacent
property-line.
(4). On all streets or alleys more thsn _~.~ feet and less than
41 feet Wide each curb-line shall be 8 feet from .the adjacent property-
line.
(5). On all alleys 28 to 33 feet wide each curb-line shall be
6 feet from ~the adjacent property line.
(6). On all ~.lleys less than 28 feet in width, each curb-line
shall be 3 feet fro~ the adjacent property-line.
(7). (a) Provided that on Nineteenth Street between the east-
erly line of Chester Avenue an~ the westerly line of 0 Street, each
curb-line shall be 12 feet from th~ adjacent property-line; also
(b) That on Chester Avenue from the southerly line of
Twentieth Street to the northerly line of Sixteenth Street, each curb-
line shall 'be 15 feet from the adjacent property-line; also
(c) That on the e~st side of Chester Avenue from the
northerly line of Sixteenth Street to the northerly line of Fifteenth
Street, the curb-line shall be 15 feet from the adjacent property-line;

(d) That on H Street from the southerly line of Califor-
nia Avenue to the northerly line of Fourth Street, each curb-line shall
be 14 feet from the adjacent property-line; also
(e~) That on California Avenue from the westerly curb-line
of F Street produced, to the easterly curb-line of Oleander Avenue the
curb-line shall be 17 feet from the adjacent property-line~from the
south side of said California Avenue between the points above
designated; also
(f) That the curb-line on the northerly side of Califor-
nia Avenue between the westerly curb-line of F Street produced, end
the easterly curb-line of Oleander Avenue, shall be 10 feet from the
adjacent property-line; also
(g) That on Lake Street from the easterly line of Union
Avenue to the westerly line of Williams Street, each curb-line shall
be 3 feet from the adjacent property-line; also
(h) On Seventeenth Street west of the westerly line of
A Street, the curb-line shall be 21,25 feet from the adjacent property-
line; also
(i) On I Street north of the northerly line of Twenty-
third Street~ the curb-line shall be 21.25 feet from the adjacent
property-line; al so
(j) On Twenty-third Street from the westerly property-
line of I Street to the westerly line of Oak Street, the curb-line
shall be 21..75 feet from the ad.~acent property-line; also
(k) On Twenty-fifth Street from the westerly property-
]~ne of I Street to the westerly line of Oak Street, the curb-line
shall be 21.25 feet from the adjacent property-line; also
(1) On Twenty-sixth Street from the westerly property-
line of I Street to the westerly line of Oak Street, the curb-line
shall be 21.25 feet~from the adjacent property-line.
(8). The radius of ~ll curb returns at the intersection of
streets with streets or avenues, shall be 7 feet.
(9). The radius of all curb returns at the intersection of
alleys with streets or avenues, shall be 3 feet.
(lO). The cross section of the surface grade of all sidewalks
shall have a surface slepe downward of three (3) inches from the prop-
erty-line to the curb-line, except in alleys where the slope on six
(6) and eight (8) foot walks shall be two (2) inches, and on three
(3) foot walks, one (1) inch.

SECTION 3. There shall be no sidewalks constructed on any street or ave-
nue less thsn 6 feet in width, and when in the opinion of the Super-
intendent of Streets, the public convenience requires a wider walk,
he shall designate the width at the time he grants the permit for
laying said. walk.
SECTION 4. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to lay
or construct any sidewalk upon any public street or alley within the
City of Bakersfield, without first obtaining a permit from the Super-
intendent of Streets of said City, to do said work.
SECTION 5. Whenever any sidewalk shall be laid or constructed, as pro-
vided in this Ordinance, the Superintendent of Streets shall place an
inspector over such work, whose duty it shall be to see that the work
and material used in the construction of said sidewalk conforms to
the requirements of all Ordinances of the City of Bakersfield relating
to the construction of sidewalks snd to the "Specifications for the
construction of cement sidewalks and curbs within the City of Bakers-
field", adopted by the Board of Trustees of said City on the 17th
day of November, 1910, and on file in the office of the Superintendent
of Streets of said City.
SECTION 6. Nothing in this Ordinance shall be construed as in any way
affecting such rights as public service corporations have under exist-
ing Ordinances and laws to uncover water, gas or other pipes or con-
duits hereto:fore laid under streets, alleys or parking spaces for the
purpose of making necessary connections or repairs.
SECTION 7. Any p,~rson violating, any of the terms or provisions of this
Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon convic-
tion thereof, shall be panished by a fine not to exceed One Hundred
Dollars ($100.00) or by imprisonment in'the Co.~tnty Jail n'ot to ex-
ceed Thirty (30) days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
