O Away OF IN 0×ICATINS LIQUORS TO PERSONS IN THE I~ILITARY SERVICE 0t~ CAIff~ED FOR MILITARY DUTY' ~D 'PROVIDIN~ A PENALTY FOR THE VIOLATION THEREOF. WHEREAS, the ~ern County Council of Defense has requested the Comncil of the City of Bakersfield to pass an Ordinance reg- ulating the sale, serving or giving away of intoxicating liquors to United. States soldiers, or persons in the military service, called for military duty in the United States, and WHEREAS, this Conncil believes said Ordinance necessary for the immediate preservation of p~blic health, peace and safety, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD, as follows' SECTION 1. It shall be nnlawful for any person, firm or corporation or their servants or employees to sell, serve or give away, or permit the sale, serving or givir~ away of any spirituous, malt or fermented liquors, wines or ciders or mixed intoxicating liquors within the limits of the Cit~ of Bakersfield, to any person or per- sons in the military service or military duty of the United States, or to any person or persons called/ for such military service or duty in the United States army, from the time s~ch person answers the roll call before the military authorities, inclnding the local Exemption Board for such military service or duty. SECTION ~. Jmy ]person or persons violating any provision.:, of this Or- dinance, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor smd shall, upon conviction thereof, be punishable by a fine not exceeding Tw_O. Hnn- dred Fifty Dollars ($2~0.00) or by imprisonment in the. Co_nnty Jail not exceeding ninety (90) days, or by both such fine and imprison- ment. SECTION ~. This Ordinance is enacted for the immediate preservation of -1 - the public health, peace and safety, and is hereby 'declared to be an emergency measure, and shall be in full force and effect in~ae- didtely upon its passage;, I hereby certify that the foregoing Ordinance was passed by a two-thirds vote of the Council of the City of Bakersfield, on the 29th day of October, 1917.
