AN 01~INANCE PROVIDING F011 AND
REGULATING THE ~EARING OF GAUSE MASKS:
MAKING THE VIOLATION A MI SD~2iEANOR AND
PROVIDING A PENALTY THEREFOR.
W~EREAS, the immediate preservation of the public health, peace
and safety require the .passage of an emergency Ordinance requiring
the wearing of gause masks during the Prealence of the present ep-
idemic of influenza;
NOW, TKER~;FOP2, be it ordained by the Council of the City o~:
Bakersfield, as follows:
SECTION 1. Every person within, or who comes within the City of Bakers-
field daring the prevalence of the present influenza epidemic shall
at all times and places within
design approved'by said City, provided, however, that said mask may
be removed, at all feasonable times for the purpose of eating and
drinking, ad provided further, that said mask need not be worn in
private home:s .or private rooms unless a case of influenza shall
exist in said place.
SECTION 2. .Any violation of this Ordinance or any portion thereof shall
be declared to be a misdemeanor and punishable by a fine not exceed-
lng One Hmudred Dollars ($100.00) or by imprisonment in the County
Jail not to exceed fifty days or by both such fine and. imprisonment.
SECTION. ~. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect immediately
as an emergency Ordinance.

the Council of the City of Bakersfield, this 28th day of October,
1918, by~ the following vote:
